What Is It?
Peter Shaffer's Equus shook theatre audiences to their cores with its first performance in 1973. It has since gone on to gain cult following as one of the most provocative theatre spectacles of the 20th Century. Based on a frightening true story, this fascinating and twisted tale of a boy who blinds six horses will be staged at the Pieter Toerien Main Theatre at Montecasino.
This new production of Shaffer's masterpiece is directed by Fred Abrahamse and stars Sven Ruygrok as Alan Strang, Graham Hopkins as Dr Martin Dysart with Monique Basson, Maggie Gericke, Andrew Roux, Mark Goldberg, Cassandra Mapanda and Len-Barry Simons. Creative collaborators Marcel Meyer and Charl-Johan Lingenfelder also provide specialised movement and choreography for the production. This is a definite must-see for theatre fanatics and anyone with an interest in the intersections between sexuality, spirituality and repressed passion.
