Where To Embrace Winter In South Africa

Joburg Admin / May 24, 2017

Afriski Mountain Resort – Lesotho Winter season at Afriski Mountain Resort in Lesotho is fast approaching (from 01 June to 02 September 2017), so why not rally up the kids and head to this exciting holiday destination for some winter fun. And best of all, it offers a unique experience that’s usually not found in Africa: snow! You heard us – you’ll get the opportunity to ski, bum-board and snowboard on African slopes, plus there are other winter activities for all ages. Tiffindell Ski Resort – Southern Drakensberg Speaking of snow, at Tiffindell Ski Resort in the Drakensberg, it’s all about the snowflakes. Being the only ski and snowboarding resort in South Africa, you can expect plenty of entertainment and snowy fun at this national treasure from June to August. Imagine escaping to a white winter wonderland, making snowmen and throwing snowballs, sitting in front of cosy fireplaces and sipping on hot chocolate. And if you’re worried about it not being the right conditions for snow, don’t fret as the resort has state-of-the-art snow-making equipment. Dullstroom – Mpumalanga Winter is all about the trout and bass fishing, so if this is exactly what you had in mind for the chilly season, then gather your fishing gear and head to Dullstroom. Stonecutters Lodge is a great accommodation destination that’s square in the middle of fish-filled dams and other winter activities. Also during the cold season is the annual Dullstroom Winter Festival (30 June to 02 July 2017), offering a wide array of shops, eateries and activities to keep you warm. Clarens – Free State Just three hours away from the hustle and bustle of the city is the quaint and charming little town of Clarens. Situated in the Free State, travellers and holiday seekers can enjoy a relaxing getaway complete with a selection of interesting activities. Stay at the self-catering Sediba Lodge, located in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains and surrounded by breathtaking views. Visit the small town and take a stroll through the streets, browsing through the stores and art galleries. There are plenty of adventure activities and hiking trails available, and to round off an exciting day, visit the Clarens Brewery on Main Street for a bite to eat and a draught of craft beer. And since it is winter trout fishing season, go do some angling at the Little Caledon River. Midlands Meander – KwaZulu-Natal The Midlands Meander is just the place to be if you’re looking to catch a glimpse of spectacular sights, do a little catch-and-release bass fishing, and keep busy with an abundance of outdoor activities. There are also plenty of things to do together as a family: zip line over the Karkloof Forest Reserve with an exhilarating canopy tour, visit the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, get adventurous on an MTB family fun trail and wander through a variety of markets. One pit stop you need to make while in the area is at the Granny Mouse Country House – a great spot to find luxurious accommodation as well as a delicious meal and indulgent spa treatments. Hartbeespoort – North West There are loads of other things you can do in Hartis that won’t involve ice-cold water. Treat the family to an outing to the Hartbeespoort Dam Snake & Animal Park where you will get to see a menagerie of animals and have the opportunity to take a ferry boat ride on the dam. For a spot of shopping and a bite to eat, head to the Jasmyn Farm Stall. And no visit to the area is complete without seeing the stunning panoramic views of the Magaliesberg and Hartbeespoort Dam from the Harties Cableway. Stellenbosch – Western Cape And last, but certainly not least, on our list of places to embrace winter is Stellenbosch. When we think Stellenbosch, we picture vineyards and wines tours, but there’s so much more to do than you imagine. There are brewing, walking and art tours – if you feel like exploring by foot – and, of course, the Stellenbosch Village Museum if you want to brush up on your history. Keen to be out and about enjoying fresh and crispy winter air and reconnecting with nature? Then head to the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden, take a stroll through the Bonsai collection, which has plants that date back over a century, and enjoy all the greenery.  WIN A Cruise!
