DStv make six channels free-to-view to combat coronavirus

Joburg Admin / March 17, 2020

Knowledge is power, according to DStv - they have made a number of their channels free for viewers in South Africa, including non-subscribers.

DStv executives have decided to make a number of their television channels free for all viewers across South Africa. This comes after MultiChoice South Africa’s CEO stated that “staying informed about coronavirus is the first step towards stopping its spread”.

The generous decision comes as millions of South Africans adhere to strict social distancing laws. A number of employees have been asked to work from home, whereas mass gatherings have been prohibited. This can limit the information some of our citizens have access to, with regards to the deadly pandemic.

What channels have DStv made free to view?

The broadcasting service have taken the decision to make six channels free for all viewers. They will be compromised solely of news channels, providing breaking updates about the coronavirus on both a domestic and international footing. The selected channels are:

  • BBC World News
  • CNN
  • eNCA
  • SABC News
  • Newzroom Afrika
  • Euronews Now

It’s worth noting that the channels are available through DStv Now. That’s MultiChoice’s online streaming platform, which is available on PCs, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs and Xbox consoles. MultiChoice CEO Mark Rayner has also confirmed that, although no COVID-19 cases have been reported at the company, they are taking every precaution necessary to keep employees and clients safe:

“Staying informed about the latest news on the virus is the first step in stopping its spread. While we are grateful that we have not yet had a single incident within our organisation, we’re working hard to ensure we keep employees, suppliers and customers as safe as we can. We’re implementing the recommended measures.”
