WAZA

WAZA: Your Connection To Japan

Here, customers can buy exclusive gifts, and place custom orders for goods from Japan. It is also an opportunity for importers and speciality stores to register on Japan Street – an online catalogue site for overseas buyers offering the finest Japanese products. Information and registration assistance is provided at the pop-up store.

The pop-up store is also an opportunity for WAZA to be closer to its loyal Gauteng-based online customers. And to showcase different cultural elements like Japanese tea and ikebana by the Johannesburg Chapter of the Sogetsu School.

What Is WAZA?

The name makes reference to a place “where Japan (WA) and South Africa (ZA) meet”. It emphasises the skill and technique required in traditional Japanese manufacturing. The criteria applied by WAZA when selecting products include:

  • innovative design,
  • quality craftsmanship,
  • durability,
  • and a sense of beauty.

WAZA focuses on sourcing functional items which make performing everyday tasks a pleasure. Whether at home, in the studio, at work, or in the garden.

The WAZA founders have over 19 years of Japan travel experience. And through its network of more than 200 suppliers – many of them traditional family businesses – they accepts custom orders for authentic Japanese made tatami, futon and noren curtains.

WAZA

Supporting Locally & Culturally

Knowing the provenance of products remains important and regular supplier visits to Japan are undertaken to not only understand more about the products themselves, but to grow an understanding of the efforts required to maintain small to medium manufacturing businesses.

By showcasing a centuries old maker culture, WAZA aims to inspire the cultivation of local skill and technique.
