Digging In At Pappas On The Square

Joburg Admin / November 1, 2016

Everybody loves a classic. Sinatra singing Fly Me To The Moon, Sean Connery as James Bond and Aston Martin in the 60s. You might not find any Sinatra or Connery or DB5's at Pappas On The Square in Sandton, but you will find that elusive quality found in the mainstay of what makes a classic. As a second generation owned authentic Greek restaurant, owner Charles de Olim goes out of his way to make sure that every nook and cranny of Pappas is running as smooth as possible - a feat he pulls off with great skill. The restaurant is built on family values and hard work and this shows in their food. Although the family is originally from Cyprus they specialise in real Greek food. Almost every second dish contains feta or olives and we are not complaining - we practically live on the stuff anyway. Pappas starters are brilliant and beautiful and are created with one thing in mind: to share. With that said, the five piece meze platter is a perfect combination of the top starters on an already impressive menu. Starters are divided between meat, seafood, and vegetarian options. Dishes that stand out in each section would be the lamb phyllo cigars, prawn saganaki, and falafel balls. Of course, the list does not stop there, so be sure to spend time looking at the starters. pappas-on-the-square When it comes to mains, hold on to your seats because life just got a lot better. Pappas signature dish is the lamb kleftiko served with potato wedges and a side of your choice. The kleftiko has been slow-cooked for eight hours and served on the bone - there are two cuts to choose from. A close runner-up would be the Pappas Chicken which is a rolled chicken breast stuffed with spinach and feta topped with a light cheese sauce and served with hand cut chips. Pappas On The Square is full of staple and signature dishes. The kleftiko's main opponent is not even on the mains section of the menu but lurks around the dessert side of life. The baked cheesecake is by far one of our favourites in the city and comes highly recommended. All in all, dinner date, quick lunch after shopping or brunch with friends, Pappas On The Square is the home away from home you've been looking for. Eat a little, drink a little and talk a lot - that's what Pappas is all about. It's the classic you've been looking for By Shawn Greyling Have you been to Pappas On The Square before?
