Cosy Up At Fiddlewoods Restaurant

Joburg Admin / June 3, 2019

Fiddlewoods Restaurant

Let me begin this foodie feature by making one thing clear - Fiddlewoods Restaurant is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. This cosy cafe is the furthest possible thing from a trendy hipster bistro (if you are looking for Insta worthy milkshakes and giant burgers, pop down the road to Hudsons Burger Joint). This is the type of place that little old ladies go to for afternoon tea with their Spaniels and grandchildren. But, that's exactly why I love it so much. I have been a regular visitor at Fiddlewoods since my childhood. After school milkshakes, Sunday brunches and coffee dates here have been a constant feature in my life. I distinctly remember trying out a tramezzini for the first time here, too. But, enough about my strange food recollections, let's get to the important stuff.

Old School Style

Fiddlewoods is the antidote to mall restaurant franchises. If the thought of another generic breakfast experience or packed mall restaurant makes you want to scream, visit Fiddlewoods. Located on the same property as Ryan's Nurseries, the cafe is serene and welcoming. Sit outside on the sunny patio, or take a moment of respite inside the restaurant next to their impressive wood-fire pizza oven. If you have the little ones in tow, ask to be seated inside the nursery. There is a play set here to keep kids entertained, as well as two friendly chickens and a colourful Macaw. While the cafe decor is nothing extraordinary, it is comfortable and familiar. What sets this home-style eatery apart from popular restaurant chains is its relaxed atmosphere and family element. Don't visit Fiddlewoods if you are in a rush - it is a place to savour flavours and good company.

The Menu

The Fiddlewoods menu features a mixed bag of cuisine influences. From Italian, to Indian, to good old boerekos and everything in between, the Fiddlewoods menu has it all. I have a few staple favourites, such as the Fiddlewoods salad - a deliciously fresh medley of salad greens, halloumi, chicken strips, crispy bacon, feta and avocado. My brunch time choice is the Eggs Benedict, which is served with hickory ham on a buttery croissant. Or, if my sweet tooth is playing up, I go for the cinnamon and sugar pancakes with ice cream. Fiddlewoods is well known for their wood-fire pizzas. These are large enough to share and come generously topped with ingredients of your choice. But, be prepared to wait awhile for this cheesy baked goodness. Order a large cappuccino and start up a long winded conversation with your dining party while you wait. Before you know it, your pizza will be ready and you will have caught up on all the gossip your friends have to offer. Overall, Fiddlewoods is a wonderful place to take your mom or granny for an afternoon tea. Even better, treat yourself to some time alone in this quiet place. Read that book you have been meaning to get to, or take a leisurely stroll through the nursery after your meal. See you there!
