Coronavirus: Which countries don’t have any COVID-19 cases?

Joburg Admin / April 1, 2020

The list of countries which have managed to avoid coronavirus is dwindling by the day - but these nations (and one South African territory) remain clear.

Coronavirus is a global pandemic in every sense of the term: The disease has spread to an overwhelming majority of countries, as attempts to keep COVID-19 at bay continue to fall short. However, there are still a handful of nations that remain free of the illness – but for how long is anyone’s guess.

“Fewer than 20 countries” with no COVID-19 cases

Five countries in Africa have yet to be hit by coronavirus. That number would’ve been higher, but on Wednesday, both Sierra Leone and Burundi recorded their first cases. The dictatorships of Asia also remain without a COVID-19 case, but that could be down to state interference with the numbers. War-torn Yemen, with enough on its plate already, has yet to register a single case.

Your best bet of avoiding coronavirus is living in the Pacific Ocean, as a number of island nations have managed to stave-off the threat. Here’s the ever-dwindling list of countries which don’t have coronavirus… yet:

Which countries don’t have coronavirus?

(Data correct as of Wednesday 1 April 2020)

Africa:

  • Comoros
  • Lesotho
  • Malawi
  • South Sudan
  • Sao Tome and Principe

Rest of the World:

  • Tajikistan
  • Turkmenistan
  • Yemen
  • North Korea* – they haven’t reported any cases, but their proximity to China and reports coming from South Korea suggest that Kim Jong-Un and his regime could be “covering-up” their statistics.

Polynesian and Pacific Islands:

  • The likes of Tonga, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Kiribati – some of the most remote places on the planet – remain coronavirus free as of 1 April 2019. But the list of COVID-19-free countries has dropped below 20.

Technically, there’s a South African territory without coronavirus

Every province of South Africa has at least one positive case of COVID-19. The lockdown has been put in place to try and starve the disease of finding any more hosts. But what about the South Africans who have been voluntarily isolating themselves from the rest of us, on faraway islands of the republic?

SA has one overseas territory in its name: The Prince Edward Islands lie about 1 750km south-west of Port Elizabeth. Stuck between Antarctica and the deep blue sea, the South Atlantic outpost is home to about 50 research staff who spend months at a time completely isolated from the rest of humanity. The group are entirely cut-off from the threat of coronavirus.

Although not a South African territory, Gough Island is about as remote as it gets. Sitting just off the coast of Tristan da Cunha – another hopelessly secluded location – there is a weather station managed by South African scientists, 2 000km off the mainland: It’s arguable that the group are in the best possible place to avoid coronavirus.
