Coronavirus update: Bleak Easter with 145 spike in new SA cases

Joburg Admin / April 13, 2020

South Africa recorded its highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in a day since the lockdown began.

Coronavirus cases in South Africa have risen to 2 173, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize confirmed on Sunday.

More than 80 000 people have now been tested in the country since the COVID-19 outbreak, while no additional deaths have been reported since the last update.

Coronavirus latest numbers and death toll on Sunday 12 April

The latest figure is an increase of 145 from Saturday’s tally, making it the most new cases recorded in a single day since the lockdown came into effect on Friday 27 March.

The death toll remains at 25, with KwaZulu-Natal accounting for almost half the deaths recorded so far.

According to the Department of Health’s official website, the number of recoveries is still at 410, with no further cases reported since Friday.

COVID-19 provincial breakdown

Gauteng continues to be the heaviest-affected province in the country in terms of infections, with the number creeping towards 1 000.

South Africa’s most populated province has a total of 865 cases, followed by the Western Cape with 587, while KwaZulu-Natal has 443 infections.

The three provinces, which contain the country’s three biggest metros, are the only ones to have crossed triple-digits, but two more are fast approaching the 100-mark.

Free State has recorded no additional cases since the number reported on Saturday and is only four short of three figures, while the Eastern Cape has gone from 69 to 88 since the last update.

As at today, the total number of confirmed #COVID19 cases in South Africa is 2173. This is an increase of 145 from the previously reported cases. pic.twitter.com/iOI2wFr4bA
