Coronavirus Quarantine: Ideal places to self-isolate

Joburg Admin / March 19, 2020

If you're dreaming of faraway places amid the coronavirus chaos, here's our list for the most ideal places to self-isolate. There’s no getting around it, with imposed travel bans and a fear of spaces that encourage people in their numbers, we can’t but help dream of faraway places that conjure up images of remote isolation and the ideal of even living off the land. While we don’t believe in fear-mongering, we do feel like perhaps we all need a healthy dose of travel inspo to take our minds off the hand sanitisers and surgical masks. So let’s mind-travel to these incredible pin drops on the map, where “hard to reach” and “wildly remote” doesn’t even cut it.

Wolwehoek, Montagu

Fueled by a love for nature and the idea of creating a space where one can get as far away from the stress of the modern world as possible, this farm offers the perfect escape in Montagu. Untouched by man, this property is evolving into a reserve. Just short of three hours’ drive outside of Cape Town, forget the mind-travelling — this is a practical local getaway. You won’t see another soul and you’re guaranteed to have this 550ha playground to use as your own backyard. Mountain views come included.

Ghost Town in Kolmanskop, Namibia

This former mining village of Kolmanskop has become somewhat of a famous ghost town. The depletion of diamonds ultimately led to its abandonment, but hey, if you’re looking for remote yet a drivable distance from South Africa, this may be where to head. Plus, you can hide from people in the sandpit…

Meteora in Thessaly, Greece

With its name roughly translating to “suspended in the air”, Greece may just take top prize for our wanderlust wish-list of remote places around the globe, with this monastery rising up from sandstone pillars and also boasting a Unesco World Heritage Site title.

Crystal Mill, Colorado

Fancy waking up to the sounds of a flowing river and nearby waterfall? Well, if you can get to Colorado, we may just have the perfect hiding place for you and offering up R&R in abundance in this little postcard-worthy log cabin. Population: 0

Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago- Ellidaey Island, Iceland

Famed and often referred to as being the most faraway and secluded house in the world, this is pretty much as remote as it gets on Iceland’s Ellidaey Island. With just five families inhabiting the island for the last 300 years, now you can claim this single structure, with its prime position on is own island, to call yours for your stay.

Bishop Rock on the Isles of Scilly, Great Britain

If you’ve always wanted to be a lighthouse keeper, perhaps now you can tick that one off the list, together with inhabiting the world’s smallest island (with a building on it). Just off the coast of Cornwall, this place is what great escapes are made of.

Casa do Pedro, Portugal

Situated in northeast Portugal, this “House of Stone”, offers you an escape that’s wholly unique and befitting of as its name. Far from the crowds, if 360 degrees views don’t have you day-dreaming, then perhaps the swimming pool — also carved out of the stone — will tip you right over the edge and in favour of Portugal as your main escape.
