We’re sure you know the basics by now: The south-west is struggling, and Cape Town is the epicentre. But the latest available data paints a much more comprehensive picture of our coronavirus hot-spots.
Mapping our disease hot-spots
As health officials scramble to strategic locations – in a bid to prevent specific districts and provinces from moving back to a tougher lockdown level – it seems there are issues being raised in two other major regions.
With help from COVID-19 SA and SAcoronavirus, we’ve put together a brief overview of South Africa’s disease hot-spots. All data used is correct as of 13:15 on Monday 3 June.

Trends and hot-spots in the Western Cape
Of the 22 087 cases registered in the province, 17 991 have happened within the Municipality of Cape Town. That’s getting it’s own separate breakdown next, but the province is responsible for 65% of all coronavirus cases in South Africa. On average, 1 015 cases a day are being reported in this part of the country.
Although infection rates have dropped in Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, most of the region saw a spike in transmissions during Level 4 of lockdown. A total of 181 people remain in intensive care due to the disease, and there are 521 fatalities in the Western Cape – a number six-and-a-half times higher than figures recorded in the second worst-hit province.

Incredibly, this one metro accounts for more than 50% of all infections across South Africa. In fact, 89% of all infections in the province come from this part of the south-west. Tygerberg is still home to over one on six new coronavirus cases in the Mother City, as eight of the ten worst-hit districts reside in the City of Cape Town.

Eastern Cape takes an unwanted mantle
On Tuesday, the Eastern Cape officially overtook Gauteng to become the worst-affected province behind the Western Cape. As well as fatalities (currently at 88), the number of confirmed cases also occupies second spot on the national list, shooting up to 4 324 (12% of all cases nationwide).
North West records a coronavirus spike
It’s a province that hasn’t really had much of a look-in with these coronavirus numbers, and that’s perhaps been for the best. But in the most recent 24 hour period, they’ve had a jump of 84 new patients. Compared to national averages and numbers from the hot-spots, this doesn’t sound too bad…
But, when you consider cases have only risen by an average of five to six people per day during lockdown Levels 5 and 4 – and factor in that this is North West’s highest individual daily increase – it puts the province right on the hot-spot radar. In the first few days of Level 3, the average daily case increase is up to 25.89:
