Coronavirus explained: Netflix mini-series released in South Africa

Joburg Admin / April 28, 2020

Netflix has released a limited series where the subject will be the novel virus - a follow up to the Explained series.

The series was released last weekend and has one episode that is available to South African viewers, so far.

The factual series will unpack the myths, spread of false news and facts surrounding the virus. The first episode titled, Pandemic, covers issues such as the origin of the virus and how life could potentially change. The episode also discusses the emergence of the zoonotic virus, where a virus is transmitted from an animal to a human.

The series is easy to follow and for those with shorter attention spans will be happy to know that the episodes are less than thirty minutes each.

The episode that was put together in two-and-a-half weeks

The inception of the series is linked to the team of the Netflix docuseries, Explained, an engaging series based on a wide range of topics such as cryptocurrency and how diamonds became popular.

Viewers will be amazed to know that the first episode, titled Pandemic took less than three weeks to produce. An amazing feat when compared to the ten weeks that was originally planned for the creation of just one episode. The team involved with the making of the series had to work remotely, which means that a lot of raw material and video interviews will be used. A challenge that faces the content used in the series, is that the information will quickly become outdated as the virus is ever-evolving.

Other episodes will unpack topics such as; vaccine development, the social distancing era and mental health implications from the virus. Release dates for the next few episodes are still to be announced.
