Coronavirus: ANC minister in trouble for posting ‘irresponsible’ video

Joburg Admin / March 22, 2020

When the government says one thing - and a minister goes for another - it's not a good look. Lindiwe Zulu isn't a coronavirus expert...

Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu took less than 10 seconds to land herself in some hot water this week, after a video she shared online about coronavirus drew the ire of South Africans.

The ANC Cabinet member posted a clip to her social media channels, in which she stated that she “had a hard time staying at home” and that the “[Coronavirus] must go away”. The advice seemingly flies in the face of the government’s message, as they are actively encouraging people to remain in their houses.

Lindiwe Zulu: Coronavirus video sparks controversy

It’s been suggested that a stricter form of “lockdown” is coming to South Africa. Cyril Ramaphosa is due to address the nation on Sunday, after a week which saw travel bans and new opening hours for recreational venues established. Lindiwe Zulu’s apparent “poor example” isn’t what the ANC, or the country, needs right now.

These sentiments were echoed by the DA’s Bridget Masango. As a shadow minister for Zulu’s department, it’s her job to hold her opposite number to account. Needless to say, Masango had a few criticisms to share:

“The Minister’s comments contradicted the measures and recommendations that her department announced for the collection of social grants. The DA will monitor the grants collection process closely and will hold the Department to account if these measures are not strictly enforced during the coronavirus crisis.”

“Minister Zulu’s comments are wholly irresponsible and sets a poor example to the public – especially the vulnerable communities who she represents. South Africa is gripped in a crisis due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in our country. As such, we require responsible leadership, especially from those in public office.”

Watch Lindiwe Zulu talk herself into trouble here:

Mr President @CyrilRamaphosa @PresidencyZA You must reprimand Minister Zulu URGENTLY and she must issue a PUBLIC APOLOGY for this. We are working very hard on the ground trying to help your efforts succees. Frankly such behavior pisses me off.#covid19SA #CoronaVirusSA pic.twitter.com/MoaQ8DCzWI
