Comforting Drinks for the Little Ones to Keep the Cold at Bay

Joburg Admin / June 14, 2019

Turmeric Latte

Despite its name, this beverage does not actually contain any coffee. Instead, this drink is made from warmed milk flavoured with spices and slightly sweetened with honey. The amount of spices and sweetener can be adjusted to your tastes. This drink can be made with regular milk or almond milk for a vegan option. Ingredients: 350 ml milk 1/4 tsp ground turmeric 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp vanilla essence 1 tsp honey pinch of ground black pepper Method: Heat all the ingredients in a pot over a gentle heat. Once warm, serve with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon. Recipe sourced from BBC Goodfood

Hot Toddy

Hot Toddies are the go-to when you are feeling under the weather. The lemon provides some vitamin C, the honey eases throats and the ginger eases congestion. The warm water will help keep the little ones hydrated while clearing out the sinus, making them feel better straight away. Ingredients: 3 cups water Juice of half a lemon 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 3 slices fresh ginger 1/2 TB turmeric 1 1/2 TB honey Method: Add the water, lemon and spices to a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Mix in the honey. Strain the mixture and serve. Recipe sourced from Infacol tea

Chai Latte

This is a spiced tea drink that is more indulgent than a regular cup of tea, and a lot healthier than hot chocolate, too. It's made with a mixture of spices that add a delicate and delicious flavour to the tea. The great thing about this recipe is that you can make a big batch, keep it in the fridge and just warm up some milk when you're ready for a cup. Ingredients: 2 cups water 2 tea bags 2 whole cloves 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cardamon or 2 pods 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp ground allspice 2 TB honey Method: Bring the water and spices to a boil. Once the water has reached boiling point, turn off the heat and allow the spices and water to sit for five minutes. Then add the tea bags and honey and bring back to a boil. Strain the tea and use immediately or store for up to two weeks. To serve, heat 1/2 cup of the tea mixture and pour into a mug. Heat 3/4 cup of milk with a teaspoon of honey, froth the milk if desired. Pour the milk over the tea and enjoy. Recipe sourced from Live Simply Chai

Hot Chocolate

If your family still insists on some hot chocolate after all these scrumptious recipes, then why not try making a healthier version of this good old favourite? Simply by making hot chocolate from scratch, you will be cutting out unnecessary sugar, chemicals and calories. You can cut out extra sugar by adding flavour with some unusual ingredients such as a touch of cinnamon, a few drops of peppermint extract or heat your milk with some orange rind (just remember to strain your milk). Ingredients: 2 cups milk 2 TB cocoa powder 2 TB honey 1/2 tsp vanilla essence Method: Put all the ingredients in a pot. Whisk until there are no cocoa powder lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and serve. Recipe sourced from Living Well Mom hot chocolate
