Classical Music Weekend At UJ Arts Centre

Sofia Kouridis / March 2, 2026

This March, enjoy a powerful Classical Music Weekend at UJ Arts Centre. Operatic favourites, choral grandeur, and world-class performances take centre stage! UJ Arts & Culture, a division of the University of Johannesburg, presents two standout concerts at the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre on 20 and 22 March 2026. These spectacular performances align with Human Rights Month and celebrate artistic excellence in our favourite city.

What Is The Classical Music Weekend At UJ?

The Classical Music Weekend at UJ features two major performances across one inspiring weekend:

  • Some Enchanted Evening on 20 March at 19:00
  • Oratorio for Human Rights on 22 March at 15:00

Acclaimed soloists, a full orchestra and choir, and a carefully curated programme promise an evening of reflection and connection. This is a rare opportunity to experience exceptional classical music in Johannesburg at accessible prices.

Some Enchanted Evening: Opera And Musical Theatre Highlights

Soprano Yolisa Ngwexana and baritone Professor Federico Freschi headline this elegant concert. Steinway Artist Christopher Duigan curates and directs the programme.

The evening includes celebrated works from:

  • Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
  • The Merry Widow by Franz Lehár
  • The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber
  • The dramatic Act II duet from La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi

Romance, drama and expressive storytelling shape this refined journey through opera, operetta and musical theatre classics.

Oratorio For Human Rights: South African Premiere

On 22 March, audiences will witness the South African premiere of Oratorio for Human Rights by Professor Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph.

The performance features:

  • The University of Johannesburg Choir
  • The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra
  • Conductor Kutlwano Masote
  • Pianist Bryan Schimmel
  • Soprano Yolisa Ngwexana
  • Baritone Professor Federico Freschi

Inspired by Human Rights Dat, this acclaimed composition transforms themes of dignity, equality, and freedom into a powerful choral and orchestral experience you really don't want to miss.
