Celebrating Women & Public Art in Newtown

Joburg Admin / August 19, 2019

What Is It?

Newtown Now invite you to celebrate Women & Public Art with them this August. In Celebration of Women’s Month, various deteriorating signs in Newtown will be painted over by local artists with images of African women. You are welcome to participate in a free, self-guided tour to view each sign as it is painted. At each location, participants will be invited to engage with topics around women & public art and the Newtown cultural precinct. The central location to receive your self-guided tour maps will at the Brenda Fassie statue which stands outside the Music Factory (formerly Bassline) at Newtown Park. The statue will soon be installed in a new location, and this tour and engagement is an opportunity for the public to share their views on where it should be moved. Johannesburg has more statues of women than many other major world cities. However, the majority are anonymous figures representing an abstract concept, rather than real historical people. This phenomenon in public art (women as representative figures, rather than individuals) will be one of various topics of engagement around the tour. Don't miss this exciting, interactive Women & Public Art debate in historic Newtown. It is the perfect way to celebrate Women's Month with a difference.
