Nicole's Night Out At Sensory Theatre

Our lifestyle journalist at Joburg.co.za headquarters, Nicole, got the opportunity to spend an evening fine dining and enjoying the top-notch entertainment at Sensory Theatre not so long ago, and had an amazing time. Check out what she had to say about her night out! I was more than excited at the prospect of dressing up in elegant attire, and spending an evening with my fiancé, Brenden, at a theatre in one of the most lavish spots in Joburg - The Venue Melrose Arch. There has been a lot of hype in the build up to the launch of the Sensory Theatre and I wanted to see for myself what it was all about. This was my first time at The Venue, and I have to say that it was just as glam as I imagined it would be – think a dimly-lit setting with bright, colourful floodlights and a festive atmosphere. Sensory Theatre The 5-course meal consists of several choices and is guaranteed to please even the most selective of eaters. For starters, I had the Buffalo Mozzarella Salad and Brenden had the Carpaccio Rose, which contains smoked springbok – it was incredibly flavoursome (I only know this because I plucked some off of his plate). Following the serving of sorbet to cleanse our palettes, we both opted for the Crumbed Chicken Breast, accompanied by vegetables, mash and gravy, for the main course – it was prepared impeccably and tasted amazing (so amazing that both of us would have had another helping if we could have). For dessert, I opted for the decadent Citrus Mousse, which contains orange zest and chocolate (also known as my ultimate weakness) while Brenden went with the Butterscotch & Date Pudding– it was a tough call but if I had to pick, his dessert tasted just a tad more divine than mine. The meals are served in-between scenes, which I feel is a great way to ensure that guests don’t feel bombarded with food. Most importantly, to keep things interesting, the menu, as well as the show, changes every few months. Sensory Theatre The show itself, titled ‘Awaken’, is a mixture of light, dance, song and narration – everything you’d expect from the theatre. However, a key ingredient, and something that The Sensory Theatre did very well, is ensuring that the audience feels like they are a part of the story … so there's a chance you might be chosen to bask in the spotlight, if you're brave enough to give it a go. Now for the important info – the cost. Tickets for the show, which include dinner, will set you back R600 per person. However, when you consider what you’re getting out of it, the price seems totally worth it! All in all, the evening did more than just stimulate my taste buds, it awakened the rest of my senses too.
