Broadway actor Nick Cordero dies from coronavirus after months in ICU

Joburg Admin / July 6, 2020

Broadway and TV actor Nick Cordero, who spent months in intensive care being treated for the coronavirus and lost his leg from complications, died Sunday, his wife said. He was 41 years old. “My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth,”

Broadway and TV actor Nick Cordero, who spent months in intensive care being treated for the coronavirus and lost his leg from complications, died Sunday, his wife said. He was 41 years old.

“My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth,” Amanda Kloots wrote on Instagram.

Kloots added that Cordero was “surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth”. She described Cordero as a “such a bright light” who was “everyone’s friend”.

A doting father

She added that he loved being dad to their son, Elvis, and that he was an “incredible actor and musician.

“I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere. My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. […] “Elvis and I will miss him in everything we do, everyday,” she added, referring to the couple’s one-year-old son.

Kloot’s also thanked Cordero’s “extraodinary docter, Dr, David Ng, for his compassion, saying he was “assertive and always eager to listen to my crazy ideas or call yet another doctor for me for a second opinion”.

“There are not many doctors like you. Kind, smart, compassionate. […] You’re a diamond in the rough”.

Documenting Cordero’s struggling with COVID-19

Kloots had documented her husband’s struggle with the coronavirus on social media. She said he had battled the disease for 95 days.

After nearly three weeks in intensive care, Cordero’s doctors were forced to amputate his right leg because his blood flow had been impeded by a clot, another dangerous coronavirus complication.

Cordero had been comatose for months but regained consciousness in early May, able to move and communicate through only his eyes. According to Kloots, he had lost 29 kilograms from muscle atrophy and was still unable to move or talk by mid-June.

Worldwide love and support

He had been awaiting a double lung transplant when he died. Cordero was known for his roles in the musicals “Waitress,” “A Bronx Tale” and “Bullets Over Broadway,” for which he was nominated for a Tony award.

He had amassed fans worldwide through his wife’s chronicling of his battle with the coronavirus. Kloots concluded her post by thanking everyone for the love and support during these trying times.

“I cannot begin to thank everyone enough for the outpour of love, support and help we’ve received these last 95 days. You have no idea how much you lifted my spirits at 15:00 every day as the world sang Nicks song, Live Your Life. We sang it to him today, holding his hands. As I sang the last line to him, “they’ll give you hell but don’t you light them kill your light not without a fight. Live your life,” I smiled because he definitely put up a fight. I will love you forever and always my sweet man.”
