The Bridge Books Underground Bookseller Tour

Joburg Admin / April 26, 2019

What Is It?

Bridge Books is an independent book store and coffee shop situated in the Joburg CBD and Maboneng Precinct. They regularly host workshops and events for Jozi book lovers eager to learn more about the history and legacy of Southern African literature. This May they will be hosting the Underground Booksellers Tour. Join Griffin Shea of Bridge Books City Central for a guided walk through the inner-city’s literary history. Trace Joburg’s informal book trade and its rich reading culture. The walk starts with coffee at Bridge Books, before meandering through Joburg's historic financial district. Stop off at heritage buildings such as the Meischke’s Building (which housed Joburg’s first bookshop and is now home to a thriving Nigerian chapbooks store), the beautiful Italianate Johannesburg City Library, colourful bookstores dedicated to African political memoirs and inner-city book markets that specialise in Southern African literature.
