Bread & Roses

Joburg Admin / October 2, 2015

Melville’s newest eatery is full of creatives, day in and day out… perhaps it’s the all-day breakfast that keeps them coming back for more! As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day, A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray, Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses, For the people hear us singing: “Bread and roses! Bread and roses!” In the same fashion as the opening stanza of James Oppenheim’s poem about the textile workers’ strike of 1912 entitled Bread & Roses, the newest eatery in Melville has taken the dining scene by innovative bravado. The corner of 4th Avenue and 5th Street (the spot where the IT Corner used to be) has been totally transformed… now sporting bright blue and green paint and dressed in the most outlandish of textiles, it looks great! But enough about the venue, we’re here to talk about what’s on the menu, right?   Bread & Roses is the brainchild of brothers Ismael and Dwayne Kapula, who constructed and curated the menu with clinical precision. From 08h00 to 18h00, the café boasts an all-day breakfast menu… this in itself is great for those of us who have our mornings and afternoons swapped around (guilty!). When it comes to breakfast, give the poached egg on potato hash a try – you won’t be sorry, let me tell you. The rule of thumb about lunch at this spot is to always have a look at what burgers are… ahem… on the table, so to speak. B&R offers a vegetarian lentil patty with tomato salsa, avocado and sour cream. For those who don’t mind meat, the menu boasts the Bread & Roses Gourmet Burger, which consists of a homemade beef patty drenched in brie served with garlic potatoes or steamed veg. You’ve got to try it. On the drinks side, they also make fresh juice. The choices are apple, pineapple, carrot and orange – ginger can be added to each if you need an extra kick on the immune-boosting front. For those of you with a sweet tooth, it must be said that dessert is rarely ordered here… but, thanks to the latest contenders on the block, this is soon to change. Bread & Roses are the kings of baked cheese cake and serve pancakes with cream, strawberries and berry sauce… and to top it all off, they make very good coffee. All in all, this spot has become the lunchtime hangout for writers, artists and revolutionaries and should be visited as soon as possible, even if you are none of the above. The food is great, the prices good and the staff awesome. by Shawn Greyling Have you been here? Rate and review your experience below!
