Books Every Child Should Read

Joburg Admin / June 21, 2019

Younger Kids

Enid Blyton - Complete Works

Blyton is perhaps the most popular children's author to date. Her books may now be considered classics, but we as book lovers feel it's important to pay homage to the classics (as you will probably tell from this list). She covers a wide array of topics from fantasy to history. If you are unsure about which of her many books or series to start with, we suggest Famous Five and Secret Seven. ~"Writing for children is an art in itself, and a most interesting one."

Frank L. Braun - The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

This book has certainly become a classic and is a prominent feature in many movies, books and songs. It tells the story of a girl and her dog who finds themselves in a strange land far away from home. The girl and her newly found friends need to use their intelligence, courage and heart to fight their enemies and return home. We love this story because it teaches us the importance of having a heart, brain and courage on order to overcome our fears and challenges. ~"Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages, for every healthy youngster has a wholesome and instinctive love for stories fantastic, marvelous and manifestly unreal."

Dr Seuss - Complete Works

We have all heard of the weird and wacky Dr Seuss and his collection of books. From Green Ham and Eggs to The Cat in the Hat, we have all heard of and read at least a few of his stories. His stories are written for children with important messages like the fact that it is okay to be weird and wacky. His books encourage children to be themselves, all wrapped up in some truly unique poetry. ~"The more that you read, the more things you'll know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." kid reading

Older Kids

J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter

We all know of this seven part book series about a boy who discovers that he is in fact a wizard. These books make this list because they truly are a great read, many people we know got drawn into reading by these books. They also teach good lessons about loyalty, friendship, courage and family. This series also has enough quirkiness to keep readers hooked. ~"I don't believe in the kind of magic in my books. But I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book."

C.S. Lewis - The Chronicles of Narnia

Who doesn't love the Narnia movies? Well, we'll let you in on a little secret - the books are even better. In fact, reading the books are much like what happens in the book - you escape reality for a little while and enter a world of magic and fantasy. ~"Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again."

Jules Verne - Journey To The Center Of The Earth

This classic author has some of the most widely translated books in the world. Journey To The Center Of The Earth follows the adventures of Otto Lidenbrock and his nephew, Axel. They travel to the centre of the earth, needless to say. In order to get there, they need to unlock many clues and puzzles. This is a thrilling adventure that's sure to keep the children occupied and thinking in more creative ways. ~ "We are of opinion that instead of letting books grow moldy behind an iron grating, far from the vulgar gaze, it is better to let them wear out by being read." reading Where to find them?
