Looking for new reading material to get lost in? The take a look at these upcoming and latest releases, read and reviewed by Chery. This is the perfect opportunity to see if any of these titles spark your interest. Keep your eyes peeled for the launch dates of some of these books.

The Crash

The Crash is a thrilling ,historical fiction about identity, revenge and survival. The book is a complex story in which the crash impacts the lives of a Parisian brother and sister. When her brother Gilles goes missing, Camille will stop at nothing which means working to track down a network of dangerous criminals illegally smuggling Egyptian artefacts into Paris. The book is full of intrigue, mystery and is thrilling and compelling. Beautifully written and descriptive. A wonderful read. Would highly recommend

Our London Lives

Our London lives by Christine Dwyer Hickey. The setting for this story is London 1979 where the main characters are two Irish teenagers who have come to London for a better life. Milly, pregnant and unloved ,finds work and lodgings in a pub, where the owner Mrs Oaks treats her like her own daughter. Pip, a rising star in the boxing world could lose it through drink and the secret he is hiding. This friendship spans over four decades. It is inevitable that these two young people will get together but not a relationship that will last. This is a love story but not a romance. It is beautiful and brutal, heartfelt and heartbreaking. The author also touches on what it was like to be Irish in the 70s and 80s in London. Terror attacks ,the Grenfell tower fire, makes the story feel so real. It can be dark at times, but clever and poignant. Beautifully written ,wonderful read ,highly recommended.

The Waiting

The Waiting is the latest crime novel in the Bosch/Ballard series. Detective Renee Ballard and her team now run the LAPD Open Unsolved Unit investigating a cold case involving a serial rapist. The newest recruit is Maddie Bosch, the famous Harry Bosch’s daughter, who has a strong lead on unsolved LA murders and users this for her own personal Investigation. Complicating life for Ballard when out surfing her badge ,gun and ID are stolen. Pity Harry was barely in this book. The master of crime has put together another tightly plotted story in this LA thriller. It’s fast pacing and entertaining. A real page turner.

One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware

A high -tension thriller following five couples trapped on a storm swept island as a killer stalks among them. Lyla a virologist, is persuaded by her actor boyfriend Nico to join the cast of a new reality TV show. They find themselves on a tropical island where the two will compete against four other couples, Bayer and Angel, Dan and Santana, Joel and Romi and Conor and Zana. Not long after they arrive on this deserted island things start to fall apart and an overnight storm takes matters from bad to worse damaging the villas and killing two people. As the group struggle to survive on little food , water or shelter and unable to communicate with the outside world, tensions run high and they begin dying one by one. The story feels like a twisted version of Lord of the flies. There is no mystery aspect to the plot and little tension in the narrative. Honestly I love Ruth Ware but this one had no satisfying conclusion.

Close Knit by Jenny Colgan

A charming, sweet novel with quirky characters set in a small town in the Scottish Highlands. The main character is Gertie ,30 years old living with her mother and grandmother and spends all her free time as part of the local knitting circle. Morag, a pilot needs a replacement at the airport and decides to to approach Gertie. She is shy and awkward and not really confident to do the job. Struan is a struggling musician and also teaches at a local elementary school. I enjoyed novel for most parts ,but it was slow going. I usually love Jenny Colgan books but had a hard time finishing this one. The storyline was confusing with too much of Gerties daydreaming and too much knitting which makes her seem like a teenager. It is a story with romance and a happy ending, beautiful descriptions of the Scottish Highlands and very well written.
