Best Pies In Joburg

Maggie's Home Of The Chicken Pie

Of course, we're kicking this list off with the greatest! They have the word "pie" in their name, so you know it's got to be good. Fortunately for them (and for us), Maggie's Home Of the Chicken Pie is off-the-hook amazing.  Maggie (whoever she is) stuffs as much filling as possible into a traditional golden crust pastry. Fillings like chicken, steak and kidney, mince, and spinach and feta are winners in our books. It's a super place to relax, people watch, and soak up the Gauteng sun. Nice On 4th

In the mood for homemade, flaky goodness stuffed with tender chicken and melt-in-your-mouth beef? Then head to Nice On 4th, the comfortable spot in Parkhurst that's a hit with the Joburg brunch crowd. The freshly baked pies here are seriously good and come served with a fresh mixed herb salad or new potatoes and veggies. Details: niceon4th.co.za

Green & Gold

Yup, the old sports pub hidden behind the N1 on-ramp in Roodepoort is not only known for its authentic South African cooking (and rugby streaming). The menu boasts a beef, bacon and Guinness pie so good that folks have been known to travel all the way from the Far East (Benoni, as it were). But the boat does not stop there when it comes to the Green & Gold pie train. The pub also serves a lamb and mint pie, a cheeseburger pie (yup, it's as amazing as it sounds), and for good measure, a classic cottage pie... technically it's a pie. All pies are served with chips and Castle Draught (at the time of writing, at least). Details: www.greenandgoldpubs.co.za

La Patisserie

Illovo's very own authentic French restaurant and bakery is home to delicious dishes. Beyond its petit fours and salmon fish cakes, La Patisserie has some of the best pies in Johannesburg... by far. The chicken pie is slightly more popular than the classic beef pie and is served with the salad of the day. Seeing as cooking is a serious art form and a national sport in France, we're glad to have a little bit of the land of the Franks in Jozi. Details: thepatisserie.co.za

2B Cuisine

In the mood for a contemporary café that qualifies as a breakfast, brunch and sandwich shop but spins out some of the best pies in town? 2B Cuisine is known not only for its sandwiches, pizzas, and burgers, but also for its oxtail, red wine and rosemary pie, served with a rocket salad and Parmesan. It's an absolute must for flaky crust lovers like us. Details: www.facebook.com/2bcuisine By Shawn Greyling Any local pie joints that you think need to be added to the list?
