They are few restaurants who can claim a 50 year history of success. Bennigans is one of those rare eateries. They've been serving up some of the best steaks and grills in the city since 1972. Their brand is synonymous with excellent dining and a great atmosphere combined with impeccable service. I'm not sure what their exact secret to success has been, but I am are certain that they will be around for a while to come. I'd driven past their venue in Kensington hundreds of times but I'd never visited them. When I spotted the signs for their new home in Bedfordview, I knew I had to make a reservation. If like me, you've never dined at Bennigans before, keep reading to find out all about my experience.
Family-friendly fun
Bennigans' motto is "Bringing Families Together". That's exactly what their new venue manages to achieve. Located at the spot where Hudson's The Burger Joint used to reside in Bedfordview, they are primely located to attract families in the area. Their secure parking area and kiddies playground also make Bennigans the ideal family-friendly restaurant.
But that's not all that this fine establishment has to offer. Bennigans is a place where friends can meet for after work drinks or for cocktails on Ladies Night (Thursdays from 16:00 - 20:00). There is ample outdoor dining space to enjoy in the warmer months and a super spacious interior to keep you nice and cozy in the winter. My partner and I opted to sit in one of their booths to stay warm and comfortable during our meal.
All about the steak
Bennigans is a meat lover's paradise. Their menu offers a variety of steaks, ribs, hearty mains and deluxe burgers. They also cater to pescatarians and the health conscious with seafood and chicken options. And they've got pizzas and pastas for those looking for something saucy and smothered in gooey cheese. There are a couple of vegetarian dishes on the menu as well, so no one will be left eating a lifeless salad if they choose not to indulge in a meaty meal.
We stuck to Bennigans' signature dish - premium A-grade aged mature steaks. I am not a massive lover of steak, but I wanted to try the restaurant's most popular dish to find out if it's really as good as advertised. I ordered a pepper crusted sirloin topped with luxurious Béarnaise sauce and served with a side of mash potato. My partner ordered the June steak special - a juicy T-Bone steak served with chips and onion rings. Both our steaks were cooked to absolute perfection and the sides were equally as good.
While steak may still not be my first choice when dining out, I did thoroughly enjoy this meal. It was hearty, wholesome and warming. The best kind of meal for a cold winter's night. That being said, we will definitely be back soon to try out more of the menu. I've got my eye on a deep-fried camembert appetizer served with melba toast and cranberry sauce. Divine!
