Beginnings Café – For The Best Breakfast In Town

Joburg Admin / February 22, 2019

Behind Keywest Dam in Krugersdorp North hides a gem of a café. Situated in a historical house and a local landmark, many patrons have stepped through mangroves and into the sanctuary known as Beginnings Cafè since it opened its doors in 2012. And when you sit down in the beautiful garden that was frequented by statesmen in the previous century, it’s as if a wave of tranquillity washes over you. Beginnings has become known as the go-to place for a delicious breakfast, high tea with the girls or a sundowner with workmates after a long day. The café has also grown in popularity thanks to brides-to-be hosting their kitchen teas there. According to Krugersdorp photographer, Bianca van Heerden, who is a regular, and knows some of the town’s history, the house was built in the late 1800s. It has been restored to its current glory and features Oregon pine floors, pressed ceilings and chandeliers. The menu sings like Edith Piaf and the plating is as beautifully quirky as Zooey Deschanel circa 2008. Among the breakfast choices are the egg and cream cheese wrap and my personal favourite, the Beginnings Breakfast — scrambled eggs served in a phyllo pastry cup with two hash browns and a slice of homemade bread, toasted. Another fan favourite is the bacon, avocado and cream cheese bread basket served with a watercress salad. The key element of the menu is Beginnings' dedication to healthy eating and sustainability – certain ingredients are supplied by the café’s own fruit and vegetable garden — nice! But what truly sets Beginnings apart is its milkshake menu! One of their 'exclusive' flavours is the pink Turkish delight milkshake — perfect to enjoy in summer. Above and beyond the food and drink, Beginnings bakes wedding and birthday cakes from Disney-themes to vintage creations. There's also a gift shop on-site stocked with unique jewellery, crafts, tablecloths and more. All in all, Beginnings is on-par with some of the popular venues of the same nature in Joburg's northern suburbs. Go see for yourself. Check them out on Facebook. By Shawn Greyling
