Hoteliers James and Vicky Peech of Johannesburg’s eco-chic The Peech Hotel have invited some of Joburg’s best-loved chefs and ex-restaurateurs to host a series of pop-up dining events in Basalt, their casual fine-dining restaurant. “We are deeply saddened that so many of Jo’burg’s independent restaurants have closed permanently,” says Vicky. “We watched with heavy hearts as the entire landscape of dining out changed during lockdown. And with this in mind, we’ve teamed up with some of this city’s best Chefs to offer local gourmands the opportunity to experience their talents once again." Vicky’s husband and founder of The Peech Hotel, James Peech adds, “Like almost every other hospitality business globally, we’ve had to be innovative in order to make the most of an extremely challenging time for everyone in our industry. We are delighted to offer the city’s food and wine lovers the opportunity to see some of their favourite chefs in action again; this time through a series of refined pop-up dining experiences hosted in Basalt. These events also provide an opportunity for some of the Chef’s pre-pandemic kitchen and restaurant teams to reunite and do what they do best.” Historically, The Peech’s clientele were mainly international travellers, however James and Vicky opened Basalt in September of last year to attract both in-house guests and local guests looking to enjoy great local food and South African wines.
