Hoteliers James and Vicky Peech of Johannesburg’s eco-chic The Peech Hotel have invited some of Joburg’s best-loved chefs and ex-restaurateurs to host a series of pop-up dining events in Basalt, their casual fine-dining restaurant. “We are deeply saddened that so many of Jo’burg’s independent restaurants have closed permanently,” says Vicky. “We watched with heavy hearts as the entire landscape of dining out changed during lockdown. And with this in mind, we’ve teamed up with some of this city’s best Chefs to offer local gourmands the opportunity to experience their talents once again." Vicky’s husband and founder of The Peech Hotel, James Peech adds, “Like almost every other hospitality business globally, we’ve had to be innovative in order to make the most of an extremely challenging time for everyone in our industry. We are delighted to offer the city’s food and wine lovers the opportunity to see some of their favourite chefs in action again; this time through a series of refined pop-up dining experiences hosted in Basalt. These events also provide an opportunity for some of the Chef’s pre-pandemic kitchen and restaurant teams to reunite and do what they do best.” Historically, The Peech’s clientele were mainly international travellers, however James and Vicky opened Basalt in September of last year to attract both in-house guests and local guests looking to enjoy great local food and South African wines. The first guest chef pop-up welcomes the reunion of alumni, with all three chefs having graduated from Italy’s prestigious ALMA La Scuola Internazionale di Cucina Italiana. Chefs Tyeye Ngxola and Tim Stewart (ex-La Petite Maison, where they soon became known for their French-inspired, refined dining experience) in collaboration with Basalt’s head chef Feni Malebye-Lutalo, will present a sublime five-course tasting menu, paired with some unique, boutique-style local wines from smaller producers. Farro Food & Wine

Having previously cut their teeth at Michelin-starred restaurants and award-winning eateries in the UK, dynamic husband and wife team, Alex and Eloise Windebank, were the hands behind the stylish Farro Food & Wine. Team Farro will offer an elevated five-course tasting menu, with optional wine pairing presented by Great Domaines. With the option of both lunch and dinner services on select dates, their loyal followers will have the opportunity to experience and savour their superior food and fabulous wine once again. Basalt

Chef Candice Philip

Formerly the Head Chef of GREI at The Saxon, Candice Philip achieved noteworthy distinction during her 15-year tenure at one of Joburg’s finest five-star hotels. Having previously worked under legendary local chefs David Higgs and Luke Dale-Roberts, chef Candice eventually took over the reigns by introducing her own successful dining concept, GREI, where she was awarded the Mercedes Benz Eat Out Nederburg Rising Star award for 2018, and in the same year, the Young Chef Award for Conde Nast House & Garden SA Gourmet Restaurant Awards. During her guest chef pop-up at The Peech, Candice will present diners with a finely curated five-course tasting menu, including a cocktail pairing prepared by one of Joburg’s best mixologists.
