Avon Justine iThemba Walkathon in Aid of Breast Cancer Awareness Join Avon Justine to Make a Difference this October This year the third annual iThemba Walkathon will be held on Sunday, 19 October 2008 at the Johannesburg Zoo. For the first time ever, Avon Justine will also be hosting an iThemba Walkathon in Cape Town on Sunday, 26 October 2008 in Camps Bay. It is a family fun walk for 5 km. Special guests who will be attending the event will include the Avon South African celebrity spokesperson Lesego Motsepe and Sureshnie Rider from 5FM will be attending the Johannesburg Walkathon. The Walkathon will be led by a group of breast cancer survivors from Bosom Buddies (a support group for women going through treatment) wearing their pink Avon survivor sashes. Funds raised will be donated to Bosom Buddies. This Ithemba Walkathon will be a day for the whole family. Shape, O Magazine, Sarie and Cosmopolitan has taken up the challenge and are sending their troops in to join the crusade. Partners this year includes Bosom Buddies, The Breast Health Foundation, Run Walk for life, Reebok, and SA-Active. The cost will be R40 for adults and R20 for participants under the age of 12. The first 2000 and 1000 participants at Johannesburg and Cape Town Walkathon respectively will each receive a goodie bag on the day. To register get to the website alongside or contact the number alongside. CANSA Mobile Units Over and above the existing iThemba mobile unit, the iThemba fund has sponsored an additional mobile unit with CANSA which will be launched in 2008. The project creates awareness of cancer of the breast and cervix through the promotion of healthy living habits and the prevention of disease with emphasis of early diagnosis and referral. The unit also conducts breast checks and pap smears. CANSA aims to substantially reduce the impact of cancer by promoting health in all communities within South Africa, through advocacy and the sustainable facilitation of research, prevention, early detection and care. Radiographers Bursary The Avon Justine iThemba Fund has sponsored six radiographers to attend a new specialised mammography course at the University of Johannesburg. The aim is to assist in combating the massive skills shortage that South Africa faces within this field. It is critical that radiographers have the skills and training in order to be able to pick up a problem in breast tissue which can then be treated and dealt with effectively. This initiative kicked off in 2008 and will be an ongoing programme as we grow the number of students each year. MNET Breast Cancer Lunch Avon Justine in association with MNET is proud to be a sponsor for the MNET Breast Cancer Lunch on Tuesday, 14th of October 2008 in Johannesburg. About iThemba: The Avon Justine iThemba Crusade of Hope raises funds for the fight against breast cancer and over the past seven years has raised over R6 million. All funds raised go towards breast cancer education and awareness in South Africa and we focus on spreading the message that early detection saves lives. One of Ithemba’s supported charities is The Look Good… Feel Better (LGFB) foundation. In August two fantastic events were held in aid of the LGFB charity. The events were held on 23 August at Kievitskroon, PTA and on 30 August at Longmeadows, Fourways JHB. The events featured well known stars like Louise Carver, Nataniël and Kate Turkington. With all these events in 2008 iThemba hopes to raise much needed funds for these charities.
