What Is It?
The ART WEEK project is inspired by similar international models aimed at developing new audiences, and increasing public exposure to contemporary art. ART WEEK is a week-long annual festival comprised of a coordinated programme of events and activations. Programmes include exhibition openings, art and cultural city tours, artists’ talks, public performances and studio visits. Events and activations are hosted by galleries, non-profit arts organisations and institutions (academic and government), artist collectives, as well as various commercial and non-commercial public spaces.
A significant part of the ART WEEK project is the facilitation of events and activations in previously disadvantaged, surrounding areas. This initiative aims to develop more points of contact between community arts organisations, informal initiatives, and the mainstream visual arts industry.
ART WEEK is used to reinforce the existing strengths of the local art scene. It aims to create a more robust community of art producers, consumers and appreciators by acting as a market platform, an information hub and a leisure attraction for locals and tourists. As it becomes more established, it will start to create greater public awareness about art and the art market, and is therefore an initiative to build sustainability of the art market in South Africa
