Alto234 Celebrates Their 2nd Birthday!

Joburg Admin / September 12, 2023

Alto234, the highest urban bar in Africa, is all set to celebrate its 2nd birthday. Nestled atop The Leonardo in Sandton, this exclusive venue has become a symbol of luxury and elegance. In this feature, we delve into the details that make Alto234 more than just a bar—it's an experience that can be summed up in three words: High. On. Life.

The Concept Behind Alto234

The name "Alto234" is a blend of the Latin word for height, "Alto," and its towering stature of 234 metres. Initially conceived to house a large, flat photovoltaic panel, the concept underwent a transformation. Legacy Group CEO Bart Dorrestein and Director Jamie Hendry realised the rooftop's potential as an unparalleled lifestyle and entertainment space.

A Multi-Use Platform

The venue has evolved into a multi-use platform, offering everything from yoga classes to panoramic views of Johannesburg's landmarks. Whether you're gazing west towards the Magaliesberg mountain range or east to the planes taking off at OR Tambo International Airport, Alto234 provides a unique vantage point. And what better way to relish these views than with a glass of Moët & Chandon champagne during a late afternoon sundowner?

The Space: A Design Masterpiece

Designed by Varoom Interiors, Alto234 can accommodate up to 100 guests across seven distinct seating areas. The design draws inspiration from three key frameworks:

  • The architectural style of the building
  • Johannesburg's apartheid and mining history
  • The city's lush vegetation

The minimalist décor ensures that nothing detracts from the breathtaking views, while the use of contemporary African fabrics and metals pays homage to Joburg's rich heritage.

Food & Beverage: A Culinary Journey

Run by the award-winning AURUM Restaurant, the bar's food and beverage offerings are nothing short of sublime. The wine list is a curated selection of global and local favourites, and the cocktail menu features sophisticated mixes made from the world's finest spirits. Moët & Chandon, the preferred champagne supplier, has even gifted Alto234 a special edition Moët Mini Machine, making it the most innovative champagne service in Africa.

Experiences and Events: Tailored to You

Alto234 is not just a bar; it's an experience. From wintery weekend brunches to summer sundowners, the venue offers a range of experiences tailored to discerning guests. The entrance fee is R330 per person, which includes a welcome drink but excludes food, beverages, and parking.

For event organisers, Alto234 serves as an intimate and exclusive venue, accommodating up to 100 people across its seven seating areas. Whether it's a private gathering or a red carpet event, Alto234 has it all.

The People Behind the Magic

Managed by Legacy Hotel Management Services and owned by Leonardo Hotels & Suites, Alto234 is run by a team of specialist waitrons and bar staff from AURUM. Adrian Landry, GM of The Leonardo, brings nearly four decades of experience in the hospitality industry, ensuring that every guest receives world-class service.

Celebrate with Alto234

Alto234 is not just a venue; it's a celebration of life, luxury, and the breathtaking beauty of Johannesburg. As it celebrates its 2nd birthday, it continues to set the standard for what an urban bar should be – elevated in every sense of the word.

Alto234’s 2nd birthday celebrations will take place on 17 and 24 September. Live music by Will Rayz and a glass of Moet & Chandon are included in the R370 admission price. The party runs from 12h00 to 18h00. There will also be raffles for intriguing prizes such as a bottle of Moet & Chandon, a night's stay at the Leonardo Hotel, and more.
