If you've never heard of the Rand Society of Model Engineers, don't fret. You're not the only one. We happened to come across their Facebook page by accident and we've been intrigued since.
Basically, the Rand Society of Model Engineers is a collective of model locomotive engineers who love to share their hobby with the public. Train enthusiasts are welcomed to join the RSME at their picnic grounds for fun mini train rides and exhibitions every Sunday. It's the perfect family-fun event.
What To Expect When You Visit
Here's what you can expect to find at the Rand Society of Model Engineers picnic grounds when you visit:
Family picnicking and train rides
Len Rutter Park is the home of the Rand Society of Model Engineers. Situated in Roodepoort, this serene outdoor setting is the perfect spot for a Sunday afternoon picnic. You are invited to pack a picnic basket or bring along your braai goodies to the park. The RSME runs mini train rides from 09:00 – 16:00. Be sure to bring your little ones along for an enthralling ride through the park. You can also catch other mini locomotives on the move around the tracks throughout the day. All it costs is R10 per person to join in, so don't miss out on this unique experience.
Visitors are also invited to bring their own locomotives to the park. Please note, however, that each steam locomotive must have a valid boiler certificate and drivers' licenses for all forms of traction are required.
Kiddies Birthday Parties
The Rand Society of Model Engineers runs children's birthday parties, school tours and events on weekdays and Saturdays, excluding Wednesdays. You can book a morning session on the trains from 10:00 – 12:00, or an afternoon session from 14:00 - 16:00. The club is not open for private functions on Sundays or on public holidays.
If your little one is a budding locomotive enthusiast, book a fun train ride for them and all their friends on their birthday. The club offers fantastic rates for their services, catering for parties of up to 50 children.
