The wildly imaginative production Afropocalypse returns to Joburg after earning the prestigious Standard Bank Gold Ovation Award at the 2025 National Arts Festival. Catch this energetic and thought-provoking show at The Market Theatre this November and December!
What Can I Expect From Afropocalypse?
Fresh from its acclaimed run at the National Arts Festival, Afropocalypse is an exuberant blend of physical comedy, magical realism, and rich African storytelling. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, a group of survivors navigate ruins and rebirth as they share fables inspired by voices such as Credo Mutwa, Jan Rabie and modern South African myths.
Director Daniel Buckland describes the show as a clever unpacking of society through an apocalyptic lens, filled with physical comedy, puppetry, and ensemble storytelling. Expect equal parts silliness and sharp social commentary, with a big heart at its core. It's a perfect family-friendly year-end outing, balancing darkness, whimsy, hope, and youthful energy. If you're keen on theatre that’s bold and inventive, then make sure Afropocalypse is on your list this season!Safe, affordable underground parking is available at Newtown Junction.
