Africa Day Celebrations Around The City

Africa Day is celebrated around the world annually. The day commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now known as the African Union). The organisation was founded in 1963, amidst aims to ended colonialism in Africa and apartheid in South Africa. Africa Day celebrates the massive achievements of the AU to end oppression in Africa and deliver social and political freedom for all. The day also has a cultural significance as it celebrates African music, food, performance art, and much more. Join in on the celebrations this May by participating in some of Joburg's biggest Africa Day events.

My Children! My Africa!

Aluta Nova Festival

Forget the image of dusty exhibits – Aluta Nova, meaning “a new challenge,” aims to reignite your interest in the city’s rich past through a fresh perspective. The festival unfolds at the James Hall Museum of Transport, a Johannesburg gem housing incredible historical vehicles.

Mayibuye IAfrika Concert

Date: Saturday, 25 May 2024.

Featuring a legendary lineup including Ringo Madlingozi, Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, Mahotella Queens, Simphiwe Dana, Siphokazi and Hope Masike, this concert celebrates 30 years of democracy in South Africa.

The second edition of this popular concert, slated for the Joburg Theatre, commemorates 30 years of South African democracy and will showcase artists joining forces to engage in a reflective journey through the power of song and an exploration of South Africa progress over the past three decades. The concert also fetaures artists from other African countries.

Bassline Fest

Date: Saturday, 25 May 2024.

Bassline Fest is welcoming everyone in the city to come celebrate with song, dance, food and fun. There will be an African artisanal market selling all manner of exquisitely created African food, arts  and craft, as well as bars and other food and drink stalls to choose from.

Soweto Theatre partners with ILFA to present ILIFA: Mother Tongue Indaba. This panel discussion, led by renowned experts Dr. Victor Ramathisele and Professor Somadoda Fikeni, will explore the current state of indigenous languages in South Africa.

Celebrating Egoli's Public Artwork
