Affordable Living at Drivelines Studios
A brand spanking new urban development using upcycled shipping containers has been officially opened in Joburg's hipster haven, Maboneng. What used to be a car repair shop is now a massive mixed-use block fitted with housing and retail and restaurant stores. This development has brought affordable housing to this smorgasbord of an area. Maboneng's developer and management company, Propertuity, is behind this development called Drivelines Studios. Container construction is the latest in a growing trend of sustainable development and Drivelines marks a first, as a multistorey apartment block made up of multiple containers. Note that these studio apartments are not for sale, and rentals start at R3 950 per month. The project was launched in 2014, led by Propertuity and designed by Lot-Ek Architecture & Design (the company behind Puma City and the Boom Community in California), and was completed and opened for occupation in September 2017.
