This immersive walking tour begins at 10:00 in the square at the Spice Shop, 52 Central Road, Fordsburg. From there, Chef Ishvara will guide you through one of Joburg’s most flavour-packed neighbourhoods.
With years of travel experience across India and the Middle East, Chef Ishvara brings deep insight into the recipes, ingredients and traditions behind each bite. Along the way, you will enjoy complimentary tastings and learn about the immigrant communities that shaped the area’s vibrant food culture.
Expect plenty of stops, including:
-A Pakistani sweet shop filled with syrupy delights-A Syrian baklava shop-A Lahore dairy shop-A Palestinian shwarma spot-Gujarati spice shops-Arabic fresh juice bars
-An Ayurvedic medicine shop-Bengali tailor shops-An Islamic clothing store-A henna and threading salon-Historical sites that tell the story of Fordsburg
You will have time to browse, shop for exotic ingredients and ask questions about techniques and flavours. It is relaxed, interactive and delicious.
The tour concludes with lunch at a traditional Arabic, Indian or Turkish restaurant. Lunch is optional and at your own expense.
