A romantic out night with the love of your life, breakdown!
I don’t know about you, but I just love Italian food. I mean, is there anything better than a tasty antipasto spread or a hearty bowl of pasta? I’ve been to many Italian eateries in and around Joburg, but one of my all-time favourites will always be Tortellini d’Oro. I recently visited for dinner with my boyfriend and had a delightful experience.
My boyfriend and I arrived at the cosy, oh-so-intimate restaurant around 19:00 on a rainy Friday afternoon. As soon as we stepped inside, we were made to feel right at home by our very warm and welcoming waiter and as we took our seats, we were each served a glass of champagne, which is standard at this charming eatery.
Because my boyfriend and I were both pretty hungry, we decided to skip starters and dive straight into mains. We both ordered the Tortellini pasta, which is a pasta with a mixed filling of parma ham, mortadella, chicken and parmesan, served in a sauce of your choice. I opted for the butter and sage sauce, while my boyfriend chose napoletana.
Our pastas came out quickly, and they were as delicious as always. It amazes me every time I eat here how the fresh ingredients shine through in every dish. It was my first time trying out the butter and sage sauce, and I must say that it was simply sublime. I finished every last mouthful of my pasta, as did my boyfriend, and it’s safe to say that we were both left feeling ever-so-satisfied.
For dessert, we then decided to order two scoops of their dreamy handmade Italian gelato to share; one scoop of the vanilla bean and one scoop of the pistachio. I just adore how the ice cream is served here - in a cute little ice 'cup', with a piece of almond biscotti on the side. Our ice cream was divine; the perfect sweet ending to our stunning meal.
Overall, we had a lovely time dining at Tortellini d’Oro. The low lighting, intimate atmosphere and comforting food made for a wonderfully romantic time. I highly recommend you try this well-loved family-run eatery the next time you’re craving Italian or are looking for somewhere new to go on date night.
