The Wanderers Club Offers World’s Fastest Growing Sport to Joburgers

The Wanderers Club has been in existence since 1888 and is home to some of South Africa’s finest sporting facilities. The club has seen talented sportsmen pass through the club and make use of their facilities through the decades. Often described as a mix between Tennis and Squash, the fast paced game has arrived to The Wanderers Club. The stats don’t lie! Over 25 million players in 90 countries have joined in on this latest craze. “We’re now thrilled to provide a home to Padel, one of South Africa’s and the world’s newest and fastest growing sports,” says Sonja Shear, General Manager at The Wanderers Club. “With the official opening of six Padel courts on 1 October, we look forward to our members and visitors signing up for this sky-rocketing racquet sport.

How To Play Padel

The game is played in either a doubles or singles format, much like Tennis. The scoring is also adopted from Padel’s older cousin, Tennis. However serves are made from the underhand from hip height. The solid racquet has no strings and the courts are slightly smaller than a Tennis court. The courts don’t have lower net and double lanes like their counterpart. Similar to Squash, the courts are surrounded by glass doors, where you’re encouraged to take and hit balls off the back wall.

The new addition, Padel, is now the 14th sporting code at The Wanderer’s Club. Paul Anderson, Padel enthusiast, says that he played the game some years ago and has been playing locally since 2021. “It’s an extremely sociable sport, but allows your competitive spirit to come out. Being outdoors and physical, it’s a great way to stay fit.” Players are to wear tennis apparel and Anderson urges the use of proper court shoes to avoid injury. The Wanderers Club will have a fully-stocked pro-shop and will rent equipment to those wanting to try it out.

How To Enjoy a Game at The Wanderers Club

It looks like it’s taken Europe by storm as Spain has over 4 million players trying out the new sport. Furthermore, sportsmen and women in Argentina and America, are making Padel their sport of choice. Celebrities such as formidable tennis player, Serena Williams, David Beckham and Gerard Piqué are huge fans, known to play this attractive game.

So, how can you get your hand on a racquet? The Wanderer’s Club is accessible to all Joburgers with a Gautrain stop just next door to the club at the Marriot. The courts are booked at R400 (for 4 people) during peak hours. While a group of 4 players will pay R200 during off-peak hours.

It’s not difficult to see why people love the game; its simple and doesn’t take much effort to learn the game. Padel is also considered to be a family sport as it’s accommodating to various skill sets and age groups. The Wanderers Club staff also gives players confidence to enjoy the game with their welcoming and helpful demeanour, athletes are made to feel right at home.
