YOLO: Experience Jozi Month By Month, Part 1

Document

Joburg, let’s make 2019 the year of experiences. It’s time to make the most of the city we live in. We all know that there are tons of things to do in Joburg, but if we aren’t intentional about it, we get to November and realise that yet another year has passed, while we were living on the monotonous train of work, eat, sleep, repeat. Here is a list of things to do in and around Joburg, month by month. These include events, cultural activities, thrills, things for the kids to do and places to relax. Why not use this as inspiration to make your own list? Get brainstorming and share your YOLO goals with us! Let’s get 2019 on the road.

February

  •   Soweto Family Fun and Fitness Day

Hey, families, this one is for you. If you want to get your kids off the couch or their noses out of Snapchat, this is a great option for you. It’s a day to promote exercise in a fun way, followed by a picnic and performances. This will be a time of bonding and sweet memories. Plus, you will all get those healthy endorphins pumping, because …YOLO!.

When: Saturday, 9 February, 10am to 6pm.

  • Simphiwe Buthelezi’s Exhibition: LALA La

South Africans, it’s time to start supporting local, and, in particular, local art. Get yourself to the Bag Factory Artist’s Studios for Simphiwe Buthelezi’s exhibition, Lala La, meaning, “come rest here” in Zulu. You’re not into that “artsy stuff,” you say? Come on, create new neural pathways in your brain with new experiences. It starts small and it starts in 2019. Also, why not expand your children’s artistic appreciation and take them along? The exhibition ends 22 February.

  • The Cookery

Make your way to Craighall Park for some sophisticated cooking classes with the Secret Jozi Chef. Become a chef in your own kitchen by attending Under The Tuscan Sun on 5 February, a cooking class on recipes for summer lovin’. Tickets are disappearing quickly, so be sure to book soon. Otherwise, keep your eye on future classes in the months to follow. We’re thinking this would be a fun way to spend a date!

  • Go Ape

Treat the family to a fun day at this aerial forest park in Modderfontein. The kids will LOVE it! You will probably love it just as much, if you’re honest. Manoeuvre your way around different levels and courses. As your strength and mind are tested, you will be building bonds with your loved ones as you laugh away your worries … and take many bribe-worthy photos.

  • Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

Personally, April is my favourite month. The weather in Joburg is something magical. It has become an annual family tradition to go for a hike and picnic at the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve in April. Spot dassies, zebras and birdlife, or visit the architectural ruins for some photographic fun.
