Where To Get Your Agave On In Jozi

Seeing as Mexican food is becoming the new Italian (we’re not complaining at all), there’s been a huge increase in tequila being consumed in South Africa. So, it’s only fair for us to put together a comprehensive list on the best places to get your tequila on.

La Rosa Mexican Grille and Tequileria

If you’re looking for an authentic tequila experience then La Rosa is the place for you. Skip the salt and lime – it’s wrong anyway – and drink your shots straight chased with a non-alcoholic sangrita (which means ‘little blood’ and is made up of tomato juice, orange juice, lime juice and hot spices). La Rosa prides itself on having an extensive selection of 100% agave tequila and some rarities.

Perron

Perron celebrates and oozes authentic Mexican culture, cuisine and atmosphere. And if you love tequila (of course you do), you will fall face first over heels for Perron. From good old tequila blanco to the dark gold, aged añejo tequila, Perron has a tequila for every palate.

El Jalapeño

We all know Linden is the culinary capital of Joburg (well, if you didn’t, now you do), so it’s only fitting that this suburb boasts a little Mexican restaurant with a big kitchen. But we’re not here to talk about the food (although it’s great). The tequila selection is small but good and swigging shots of agave juice is a ritual at El Jalapeño. Come and get your fill of this tradition.

Salsa

Salsa Mexican Grill is unique among Mexican eateries with their craft tequilas. They use a select batch of blue agave and infuse it with fruits and herbs and let it ferment for up to 25 days. You can also unleash the craft tequila brewer in you by going onto their website where they invite you to create your own tequila by playing with flavours and submitting your combination. You then stand a chance to have your unique tequila brewed, bottled and served at all their restaurants. Pretty innovative if you ask us.
