Top 4X4 Tracks Around Joburg

Est. Reading: 3 minutes
Gauteng is known for its stretching landscapes and tough terrain. This is what makes for an off-road junky's paradise. We went exploring and found the best 4X4 trails around.

Hennops Offroad 4x4 Trail

One of our favourite places to go for a hike just became a lot cooler. The Hennops trail sits on the halfway mark between Jozi and Pretoria and consists of many climbs, downhills and even two river crossings. Make sure you bring your A-game on this trail, as certain parts are pretty tricky and we recommend a walk-through before attempting some of the obstacles. The Hennops Trail also offers accommodation if you'd like to spend some more time in the bush. Also, you can take your mountain bike along and enjoy one of the country's top MTB trails.

De Wildt 4x4 Trail

Just past the beautiful world of Magaliesburg, you will find the De Wildt 4X4 Trail. A lot of the climbing done on this trail is on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountains between Pretoria North and Brits. De Wildt is a game park specifically designed for 4×4 enthusiasts and has abundant wildlife in a rugged mountainous terrain. Regular vehicles are not allowed beyond the camping area into the game park, as the roads and some obstacles can be challenging, even for experienced 4×4 drivers. 4×4 owners can, however, test and practise their skills at their 4×4 training facilities before entering the Game Park. This comes highly recommended as it will give a taste of what to expect on the trail.

Kungwini 4x4 Trail

Kungwini is a 20km eco-trail near Bronkhorstspruit on the eastern side of the Magalies Mountain Range. This scenic trail passes by rock formations and historical ruins leading to a spectacular view of the Kungwini Dam. The Kungwini 4x4 trail offers great nature photography opportunities as well. There is a designated 4x4 campsite on the trail that has running water and ablution facilities. Amateur drivers can choose from two training tracks and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while honing some off-road driving skills. Kungwini is open Tuesday to Sunday from 7:30 am to 5 pm.

Renosterfontein 4x4 Trail

The McCarthy Renosterfontein 4x4 Trail is situated on a farm outside Rayton, about 35km from Pretoria. Claimed to be one of the most challenging routes in South Africa, this is a guided trail and advance booking is essential. This 12km circular route takes three hours to complete. The trail terrain is a mix of water, boulders, ditches and steep climbs that require a full spectrum of 4x4 skills. This one is not for the faint-hearted. A restaurant, as well as braai facilities, are available at the park.
