21 July is World Ice Cream Day! We know that we’re in the middle of winter, but that will not stop us from having a scoop or three to celebrate! We take our ice cream eating very seriously. While we can all appreciate a run-of-the-mill soft serve, when we really want to indulge in this frozen treat, we have a few sweet secrets up our sleeves that we thought we’d share with you.

Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream
Paul Ballen has become somewhat of an institution, thanks to his brand of homemade ice cream. This stuff is great and if you haven’t tried it yet, we urge you to drop whatever it is you’re doing and go get some. It’s free from preservatives, additives and chemicals and is made with only the finest ingredients. Check the Paul website for more information.

La Cremosa
La Cremosa has brought a taste of Italy to Joburg. Their artisanal Italian gelato is divine and is made using traditional and authentic Italian family recipes. Honestly, the pistachio ice cream that these guys create is enough to make you lose your mind and eat the whole tub (it happens, okay?). La Cremosa even changed our mind about sorbet – we were never fans until we tried their mango and strawberry flavours… let’s just say we’re hooked!

Häagen-Dazs
Häagen-Dazs never disappoints. Their brand of ice cream keeps people coming back for more – and for good reason, of course. Indulgent, decadent and ridiculously addictive, their banoffee, vanilla and macadamia nut brittle flavours are enough to satiate anyone’s sweet tooth.

Tashas
The Tashas in Hyde Park’s desserts are something else. Sit down and order a trio of ice cream… their wide range of flavours is enough to send you into a sugar coma (in the best way, of course). Just head up to the glass ice cream container and go wild. We suggest closing your eyes and picking the first three you point your finger at… you can’t go wrong here!

Royal Danish
This ice cream parlour is in Pretoria but it’s so worth the trip… and it’s not even that far from Joburg! The best part about this place is that it’s open at night! The establishment makes use of traditional Danish recipes with only the finest ingredients! They have take home packs (even caramel or chocolate sauce to take home), which will be music to your ears once you taste what they sell! Go for an ice cream and waffle combo… you won’t be sorry! Check out their Facebook for more details.

Wedgewood Nougat
Cool down with some delicious Ice Cream from Wedgewood Nougat in Parkhurst! The beautifully decorated store is a great place to shop for gifts as they stock; biscuits, truffles, nougats and much more! It would be a sin if you left the store without a scoop of their delicious ice cream! We recommend trying their Honeyed Macadamia Nougitina Ice Cream.
