What Is It?
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has gifted the world with 13 epic stage musicals over his long-spanning career. Many of these musicals have graced the stages of the West End and Broadway for decades, as audiences flock to get a taste of the Lloyd Webber magic. In light of the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide, theatre shows have come to a grinding halt. However, in keeping with good theatre tradition, Lloyd Webber and Universal Studios have come together to bring you The Shows Must Go On live streaming event. Each Friday during May, one of Lloyd Webber’s most beloved musicals will go ‘live’ via his YouTube channel. Each show will run for 48 hours, so you can access the stage magic throughout the weekend.
The series kicked off with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on 3 April 2020, starring Donny Osmond, Maria Friedman, Richard Attenborough and Joan Collins. The 2012 production of Jesus Christ Superstar, with Tim Minchin, Melanie C and Chris Moyles followed, with perhaps Lloyd Webber’s most famous musical up next this Friday – Cats! Starring Elaine Paige, John Partridge, Jacob Brent, Jason Gardiner and Sir John Mills.
In a short announcement, Andrew Lloyd Webber also hinted that his 1975 disaster musical By Jeeves will be included on the Shows Must Go On programme sometime in the near future.
The Shows Must Go On YouTube channel will not only be bringing you stage masterpieces, but tons of behind-the-scenes footage as well. Come along for backstage access, memorable melodic moments, show-stopping solos and high notes for the history books! This is definitely not one to be missed.
