The brand was founded in September 2016, but in terms of it being official it was in April 2017, and we have been growing strong ever since.
It was founded by myself, Langa, and my wife, Unathi. The back story is that we were on a trip to the U.S.A and saw that everyone, even South Africans, looked the same as those from abroad. So, shortly after arriving back from the trip we took a conscious decision to wear clothes that were locally made, and clothes we thought stood out and distinguished us from everybody else.
We stopped buying clothes from stores and started making them. Our neighbour at the time was a seamstress, so we would buy material and she would make the clothes for us. We made clothes for ourselves and our kids. People started seeing the clothes and they liked them, especially our friends, and we thought we could make a business out of it. That's how Sinkwa Sethu was birthed.
Isinkwa sethu, semihla ngemihla, meaning our daily bread. The whole concept of our brand is to add colour to our every day. "For a colourful people" – that is our motto. Traditional African clothes are normally for occasions, but our plan was to bring the traditional African clothes concept to the fore of our everyday life. Whether you're going to a meeting or work, sitting at home, out with friends and so forth, it would be normal to wear African clothing. We believe that's what it should feel like.
When my wife and I met at university I was studying marketing and she studied economics, and the plan was always to pursue those kind of professions, but along the way we seemed to take different routes. My wife did go into corporate, and I went on and pursued music with the South African contemporary Gospel group We Will Worship. When we had our first child, we decided that she would stay home and from then on she started taking pictures of our baby, and people were into her photography and they wanted her services as well, which is how her Unathi Mbonambi Photography career started. These were not the kind of things we thought we would pursue, but things that we found along the way; things we enjoyed and grew into. We learnt a lot along the way. We are the type of people that just do things, why not?
I am responsible for all the designing and, the seamstress stitches everything together, following the designs. We work out patterns and test them out on friends to see if they like it. Unathi, on the other hand, handles all the back-end tasks, the online concept, social media, website and so forth.
We use a lot of Ishweshwe, which is a Sotho print, particularly because of the colours. We like it because it is a South African print and found nowhere else but here. Our Spring range will be the Tsongo culture with the flowers and colourful prints, and IsiXhosa – Umbhaco – for winter because of the heavy and tough material. We also have the Venda print coming up soon.
We work as a collective, my family and I. Everything we do revolves around the issue of identity. This is something we are trying to instil in our kids – to be proud of who they are and who they have been made to be. Even with the music I make, we make sure that we sing in our languages. We actually home-school our kids and part of that journey is to play a big role in their character building, and in that we want to play part in being proud Africans. The embracing of what we have and who we are also plays a big role into the clothes we make. Identity! Not only being a special occasions thing, but an everyday thing.
We are looking into reaching out globally, as the desire for African clothes already exists. Another goal of ours is to just continue as a family, especially as an African family, whether it be through fashion, music, lifestyle... We just aim to inspire.

Melrose Arch Trading Hours:
Africa’s most unique winter music festival, Afriski Winterfest, took place in Lesotho over the weekend and attracted an audience from all over South Africa. With fresh snow sprinkled across the mountains and South Africa’s top artists on the lineup, it was a jam-packed music and snow fest! It was an event that officially opened the winter season - three months of skiing and snowboarding fun at Afriski Mountain Resort.
By day, festival goers took to the slopes! First timers and seasoned pros made the most of the daylight and free snow gear rental throughout the entire weekend, skiing to their heart's content. And once the boards and skis were packed up for the day, it was time for the main event.
The temperatures dropped and so did the beats. The evening warm-up took place over good food at Skybar and a live evening jam session from Simone Govender, 4AM to Will Rayz. Gondola Café at the base of the slopes came alive with a power lineup of DJs like Black Sparrow, Skye, Mocheques and Easy Freak. Along with artists from across Southern Africa, Winterfest was proud to have hosted Lesotho’s very own, Leomile.
For the Afriski Winterfest Season Opener, there was an all-star lineup that featured Rubber Duc, Albert Frost, Gunshot Blue and headline act, Jack Parow. The last day was a little cooler, but Jack Parow’s high energy show got the crowd warmed! The festival ended in style with a champagne drenched main stage show and the ritual “Ski Burning”. Dressed in Basotho gear, Afriski veterans performed under the clear starry sky, chanting into the chilly night sacrificing the skis to the fire and bringing the festival to a close.
With the frost barely settled on the Afriski Winterfest Season Opener, the mountains are braced for an even bigger avalanche of music and snow. Afriski Winterfest will be closing the season on the 23rd to 26th August. Book your ticket at www.winterfest.co.za and experience it for yourself.
The second round of Afriski Winterfest 2018 will take place from the 23 - 26 August 2018. It's the ultimate winter celebration, so if you missed the first one, make sure you book your spots at the end of season fest. Tickets and packages are available now on their website.

We love the fact that owner-manager Heather Lund Truter gave up a ten-year career as a private banker in order to start this amazing store in Kramerville. In a nutshell, Exquisite Cuts offers hand-picked short-ends – remnants and end of range fabrics from local and international décor houses. This means that YOU get the best fabrics, but for so much less!
The range is constantly evolving and changing as new fabrics become available. I opted for some ready-made cushions to refresh my living room. I was spoilt for choice with a wide range of phenomenal fabrics from which to choose. But it doesn’t stop there – you can also buy discounted upholstery and curtaining fabric at a variety of price points. All of this just makes redecorating so much more affordable and FUN!
What impressed me most about the store is the passionate and insightful team that does so much more than just sell fabric. They are quick to offer advice, insight, suggestions and creative ideas to help you transform a tired room into something that reflects your family. You can bring photos with you and ask for advice. The team will then help you come up with an action plan that suits your time and budget. I prefer using very inexpensive fabric for curtaining and then ramping up the look with stunning accent cushions – that way, I get a brand new look for a fraction of the price (and yes, I have both “summer” and “winter” cushions – you will too when you visit this amazing shop!)
Another bonus is that Exquisite Cuts also offers ready-made curtains (an absolute win for those looking for instant gratification). They have a team of tried-and-tested curtain-makers if you’d like something made to spec.
Follow the store on Facebook to keep updated with new fabric lines that become available. In brief, I would highly recommend popping in for a browse and to treat yourself to new cushions for your Master Bedroom or living room. Take photos before you go – you’ll be amazed at what the team suggests and the difference it will make to your space, without breaking the bank.
PLUS you get to #SupportLocal!

Echinacea is a herbal remedy used for the symptomatic relief of colds, influenza-type infections and upper respiratory tract conditions. It helps the body fight the symptoms of these infections by supporting and strengthening your immune system.
Antioxidants (betacarotene, lutein, lycopene, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E) can be found in fruit, vegetables, nuts, wholegrains and some meats, poultry and fish. They neutralise free radicals that damage cell membranes and other structures in the body. Free radicals are linked to cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and liver and heart disease.
The superfood is jam-packed with immune-boosting nutrients and antioxidants, and reportedly helps prevent bladder infections, promotes dental health and lowers blood pressure.
Spirulina, another superfood, is a type of algae that has a high nutritional value and significant amounts of amino acids (the building blocks of protein). It helps to boost the immune system, speed up recovery after illness, protect against allergic reactions and maintain healthy skin, hair and nails.
Zinc is necessary for the proper function of more than 70 enzymes in our bodies. Besides keeping our immune systems in good working order, it also aids the release of insulin, enhances white blood cell functions, helps with acne and helps to rid the body of harmful metals.
Eat fresh, seasonal foods
Yoghurt. Probiotics, or the live active cultures found in yogurt, are healthy bacteria that keep the gut and intestinal tract free of disease-causing germs, which in turn equals a healthy immune system.
Oats and barley. These grains contain beta-glucan, a type of fibre with antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities more potent than Echinacea. It boosts immunity, speeds wound healing and may help antibiotics work better.
Garlic. The immune booster contains the active ingredient allicin, which fights infection and bacteria.
Fish and seafood. Selenium helps white blood cells produce cytokines – proteins that help get rid of the flu virus. Fatty fish is rich in omega-3 fats, which reduce inflammation, increasing airflow and protecting lungs from colds and respiratory infections.
Mushrooms. Mushrooms increase the production and activity of white blood cells, which help to fight infections.
Get a flu shot
Flu viruses change, and every year the flu vaccine is adapted to the virus in circulation that year. The vaccination can reduce the risk of flu by up to 50 to 60%, keeping you away from the doctor, hospital casualty visits, and even hospital admissions. The best time to get a flu shot in SA is before the end of April, but you can still get it at any time during the winter season. Get it at most Dis-Chem and Clicks stores nationwide, plus your local pharmacy, GP, clinic or hospital.

When I decided to go to my first class, I was quite nervous because I didn't know what to expect. I had heard a few things about it – how hectic it was and I just pictured myself falling over and fainting before I’d even gotten started. Plus, when I told my friends and colleagues, they wished me good luck and that they hoped I would survive this crazy experience (I was wishing for a little more encouragement than that).
Anyway, if you don’t know, S.W.E.A.T stands for ‘Specialised Weight Endurance Aerobic Training’, with 1000 representing the calories burned in a one-hour workout. The thought of walking through the doors at the S.W.E.A.T Studio at Blubird Shopping Centre was rather intimidating, but I was immediately welcomed by friendly staff. I was then greeted by the instructor who asked me if it was my first time there – when I said yes, he talked me through the process and how the treadmills work.
A S.W.E.A.T class is basically running and walking on a treadmill at different speeds and inclines – you just have to follow the speed and incline levels that the instructor tells you. They combine this with floor work like squats, push ups, weight lifting and crunches (so you alternate between the treadmill and floor work). To add to the fun, you do this to loud, dance music, lasers and a smoke machine.
I can honestly say I was pushed to the max and there were moments where I thought I was crazy but I still walked out of there feeling exhilarated. There is something about being in that studio with loud music pumping, the instructor pushing you hard and everyone in there giving it their all that makes it fun! My muscles ached afterwards but I felt like superwoman. Needless to say, I’m completely hooked and I can't wait for my next class.
