What is the Better Cotton Initiative?

The Better Cotton Initiative is a non-profit organisation working towards sustainability in the fashion industry by encouraging top retailers to source their cotton only from sustainable resources, using eco-friendly dyes and chemicals and avoiding water wastage in the production of their clothes. BCI also advocates for fair workers’ rights and sustainable farming practices, with a specific focus on farms and factories located on the African continent.

The Cotton On Foundation announced in early 2020 that the brand would be joining BCI in their plight for a sustainable future. As such, all of Cotton On's denims and basic tees are now made using only sustainable resources from the Kenyan Cotton Program. Using a blend of recycled cottons, Cotton On has transformed these everyday clothing pieces into eco-friendly fashion must-haves.

Cotton On's Winter BCI range

No item of clothing will see you better through the cold winter months than a good pair of denim jeans. The solution - layer up! Hello Pretty is your one-stop shop for great T-shirts this winter. Their traders sell everything from graphic tees to hand-knitted tops and shawls. Our favourite is this pretty floral tee with peek-a-boo back from Dandelion Fashion. It's the perfect slash of colour for those dreary winter days. Get it now before it's sold out!

With its industrial powder coated steel frame and unique rectangular shape, this table is ideal for a trendy Joburg loft apartment space. You can custom order your table from Kurve Designs to suit the dimensions of your living space, too.

Eyes

Give your eye game a makeover this winter by embracing the top trends of the season. Some may seem a little out there, but isn’t that what makeup is all about? Experiment with new colours while you’re stuck at home so you can enter the real world with uber confidence.

Winged Eyeliner

The classic winged lid is back! Also known as the 'Cleopatra' look, winged eyeliner makes a powerful statement. Use a high quality liquid liner to achieve this look. It may take a bit of practice, so don’t attempt this look right before an important video conference or Facetime date, unless you have a super steady hand.

Pops Of Colour

Who doesn’t love a bit of colour? This season’s eyeshadow and mascara trends are all about bursting pops of colour, from bright reds, to neon and even pastel tones. Play around with the rules, too. Draw outside the lines and try a lower lid colour line or a jagged eyeshadow effect. Even though it’s dreary outside, you can still express your playful nature through your makeup looks.

Cheeks

Pack away your primers, highlighters and contouring tools. Keep your makeup routine clean and simple this winter instead of shading in every angle of your face. The cold weather can easily dry out your skin, too, so avoid heavy makeup for now.

Blush Pink

Blush is back! Pretty pinks are here to brighten your winter look and give you an air of girlish coyness. However, it’s important to find a blush tone suited to your skin to avoid looking like a ragdoll. Lighter skin tones can pull off baby pink while melanin queens totally rock a deep blush pink.

Lighter Than Air Foundation

Even though we tend to sweat less in winter, there’s no need to lay on six layers of foundation. This is especially true for those of us with oily and acne-prone skin. Use a light CC cream with at least SPF 15 coverage for your daytime look, reserving your foundation for special occasions like a trip to the grocery store!

Lips

Winter is the perfect time to play around with statement lip looks. Whether you go for a classic, striking red or a runway-inspired vamp queen aesthetic, you’re sure to look stunning.

Classic Red

Red lipstick never goes out of style. This look is great for an everyday get up or to impress that special someone. If you don’t already have a trusty red lipstick tucked away in your purse, spoil yourself this season. Pair with your perfected winged eyeliner for a dramatic date-night-in look.

Vampy Chic

The 90s vampy aesthetic was all the rage a few years back. This winter, it’s making somewhat of a comeback, but in a more sophisticated way. Think dark mauve lip shades, but without the excess eyeliner. This look doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s always fun to try something new. As long as you don’t resemble the undead, you should be alright to wear this shade of lipstick with confidence.

Sheer Makes A Comeback

If you've just bought a pair of opaque tights to see you through winter, we apologise. The 1980s-inspired sheer tight is back this season! While not totally practical, these tights do add a touch of sexy to almost any outfit. However, you don't have to stick to boring old black, because this winter trend has undergone a major modern update. Sheer red tights, polka dot tights and striped sheer stockings are what's "cool" at the moment. Get quirky with your winter look and throw on a pair with your favourite mini-skirt or winter dress.

Styling Tips:

Sheer tights are prone to ladder or rip. Make sure to invest in a good pair to avoid mishaps when pulling them on. If you aren't comfortable with wearing near-naked tights, invest in a sheer blouse instead. Go for a blouse with a cuffed peasant sleeve to emphasise the 80s aesthetic or a cute pussycat bow for added sweetness.

Where To Get It:

You should be able to get a good pair of sheer tights from a range of retailers this winter, including Woolworths, Edgars and Truworths. However, we adore this sheer polka dot blouse from Mr Price Clothing. It's a great way to ease yourself into the sheer look if you've never attempted it before. It's the perfect balance between classic chic and modern edgy.

Houndstooth

If you've ever wanted to own a houndstooth coat or suit, now's the time to invest in one. While checkered patterns were in last winter, in 2020 you're likely to see fashion fundis turn towards the more classy houndstooth look. The great thing about purchasing a coat or suit in this pattern is that it's a classic. It's likely to stick around for at least another two seasons and even then it never really goes out of style. Longer length coats are still the go-to for this season as well, so avoid a close-fitting mid-waist fit and go for the asymmetrical look instead.

Styling Tips:

This classic pattern is both demure and bold, but it can be intimidating to style. If you're going to wear it from head to toe, stick to one set pattern. But if you're going for a more casual approach, brighten things up with a colourful blouse or skirt. If you are blessed with curves, throw on a wide belt with your coat to accentuate your waist rather than your hips.

Where To Get It:

You can choose to save or splurge here. Our save option is this houndstooth knit jersey by Telma from Superbalist. Warm and snug but super stylish, this would be a great winter wardrobe addition. If you have a little extra to spend on yourself, take a look at this houndstooth coat from Zara. It's classic, yet edgy with ample pocket space.

Faux Leather Trench Coat

The androgynous look is gaining more and more purchase in fashion circles, as gender norms shift to embrace fluidity. Winter is the ideal time to play around with your androgynous style and get more daring with your fashion choices. Invest in a faux or PU leather trench coat this winter to get started. The dramatic length of a trench coat may be difficult to navigate at first, but fashion is never much about comfort. Pretend that you're in the Matrix if you have to, but not in front of other people.

Styling Tips:

Brown and tan PU leather is the colour of the season, along with good old black. These colours are relatively easy to style, but try to stick with a less is more approach to ensure that the coat stands out as the centrepiece of your ensemble. Again, wear a belt if you are worried about looking bulky. If you're on the petite side, wear high heels to avoid disappearing underneath your coat.

Where To Get It:

Superbalist has three faux leather trench coat options to choose from. We personally prefer the understated pleather coat, but if you're all about high stakes fashion get yourself one of their vinyl patent PU trenches. This trench is available in jet black or neutral for only *R1 199.00. Pair your coat with a slick pair of shades and you'll look super cool (in this dimension or any other).
