This relaxed bistro in Craighall Park serves modern South African dishes and boasts a deli and coffee shop with croissants, but that's not why they are on this list. We've obviously mentioned them because they have some awesome pizzas if you have that cheesy craving! You can take your pick from a banting or wheat-free base if you have certain dietary requirements to keep in mind, and now for the best part: picking your pizza! We love the Pesto Rubbed Haloumi Pizza with chorizo, half portion of mozzarella and onions caramelised in apple juice; and the Prosciutto Pizza topped with artichoke, rocket, Padano shavings and a balsamic reduction. Yum! So, if you're in the area, be sure to stop by CNR Café & Bistro.
When it comes to Piza ē Vino, Italian food is not a trend, it's a way of life! And this is why Piza ē Vino has been celebrated as one of Johannesburg's top pizza spots when the craving hits. Their pizzas are just SO good! Here, you can expect to indulge in flavourful pizzas, created with only the best in high quality ingredients, and the crusts are just so moreish. A few of our favourites from this beloved pizza spot includes the James Brown (chicken, bacon, guacamole, red onion, cheddar and BBQ sauce) and the Porky The Pig (pepperoni, salami, bacon, caramelised onion feta and basil). You can never go wrong with a pizza treat from Piza ē Vino!
Now matter where you are in the city, there's bound to be a Doppio Zero somewhere, ready and waiting to serve you delicious wood-fired pizzas so you can celebrate Pizza Day with your family and friends! If you believe pineapple belongs on pizza, then you best try the Paradiso which is also topped with country ham. For something meaty and a little spicy, we'd definitely recommend the Leo Leone, topped with bacon, chorizo, mushrooms, green pepper, onion, and chilli. Or why not enjoy seafood on a pizza with their Tutti Frutti Di Mare, complete with calamari, calamari heads, prawn meat, mussels, garlic, parsley, and whole prawn(s). Stuck between two pizzas? Not a problem, order the Doppio and enjoy half of any two pizzas!
Col'Cacchio offers divine artisan wood-fired pizzas loaded with the freshest gourmet ingredients. Stop by on any day of the week for your fill of cheesy, meaty, vegetarian or vegan pizzas. Wondering what's on the menu? Well, why not take your pick from the Hollywood Scene (bacon, thyme, rosso onion, avo, crispy onion); the Lazio (dairy-free nut based cheese, avo, balsamic roasted cherry tomato, pumpkin seeds, fresh basil, extra virgin olive oil); the Moghul (Indian butter chicken, yoghurt, fior di latte mozzarella, coriander, crispy onion) or the Nacho Libre (jerk spiced chicken, sour cream, home-made guacamole, tomato chilli salsa, coriander). But that's not all! There's plenty more where that came from. Click here to take a look at the rest of the menu.
Bringing authentic Roman dining to the city, Lupa Osteria is just the place to visit if you're looking to delight the taste buds with some hearty and full of flavour. We really love the sounds of their Yoga Bunny (Napoletana sauce, vegan mozzarella, roasted butternut, Piquanté Peppers, vegan basil pesto, avo and rocket); The Amy (butternut, feta, caramelised onion, pumpkin seeds and rocket); and the Massimo Calzone (tomato, mozzarella, ham, mushrooms, feta, caramelised onions and Parmesan, served with sliced avo and brushed with garlic butter).

Meat-Free Mondays have been around for some time. However, over recent years this movement has gained more and more traction as 'flexitarians' have taken up the baton of eating fully plant-based meals for at least one day of the week. Studies have shown that eating a majority plant-based diet has great effects on physical and mental health. Plus, by not consuming meat or animal products for just one day a week, you can help save the environment. If you've been considering joining the movement, you're in luck because one of our favourite vegan-friendly eateries has debuted their own Meat-Free Mondays special!
Doppio Zero is known for its wholesome and hearty menu. Filled with Mediterranean influences and contemporary twists on the old classics, their menu reflects ever-changing food trends. In response to the rise of veganism and plant-based eating, Doppio Zero has endeavored to diversify their menu options as well. Their restaurants are now some of the best loved vegan-friendly spots in the city. It comes as no surprise then that they've just introduced their new 15% discount on all vegetarian and vegan meals on Mondays.
Doppio Zero has been offering delivery and collection services since the start of level 4 lockdown. To accommodate for this, their menu has been reduced somewhat. However, this does not mean that you cannot still enjoy your favourite vegetarian pizzas, salads and winter warmers. Doppio Zero's new takeaway menu features a section specially dedicated to their vegan customers.
Coined the 'Vegan Pantry', this mini-menu features a delicious array of plant-based meals to suit any palate. Our top pick would be the Vegan Roasted Butternut Curry - roasted butternut, sweet potato, chickpeas and cashew nuts served over basmati rice and topped with fresh coriander. The perfect warming dish to up your spirits this winter, we think. But if that isn't quite to your taste, give their Above and Beyond burger, Spaghetti Vegano or Vegiterranean Pizza a try.
Doppio Zero's new takeaway menu also features lots of vegetarian dishes, including the moreish Buddha Bowl - a delicious mix of wholegrains, basil pesto, beetroot pealafel fritters, red pepper salsa, crispy chickpeas, feta and hummus yoghurt! Talk about a plant-based feast.
Doppio Zero does not employ third party delivery services. Instead, many of their waiters and kitchen staff have been deployed as Doppio Zero's very own speedy delivery team. This means that you must contact your nearest Doppio Zero via WhatsApp to order your Meat-Free Mondays meal. You can then either opt to have your food delivered or to collect it just outside the restaurant. Doppio Zero only delivers within a 5km radius, so keep that in mind before ordering. There will also be a R25 delivery fee to help support their staff in need. Here are the WhatsApp contact numbers for the Doppio Zero branches located in Johannesburg:
Visit doppio.co.za for more information about Doppio Zero's Meat-Free Mondays specials and delivery services. You can follow them on social media, too:

There are many benefits to going on a meat-free diet. Although it can be a difficult adjustment when you first start, there is never a better time than the present! The lockdown meat-free challenge presents the ideal opportunity to give a more plant-based diet a try.
This challenge opens the door to a plethora of benefits. These include:
Meat contains a great deal of fat, so enjoying well-planned and balanced meat-free meals will assist you in reducing your calorie intake. Why is this beneficial? You will consume less saturated fats, and more mono- and poly-unsaturated fats. Saturated fats can cause unwanted body fat and lead to chronic diseases, so it's best to reduce your intake if you can. Just remember that you'll generally need to eat more in order to stay full on a meat-free diet.
Although meat is packed with protein, meat consumption may potentially trigger diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, gout and osteoporosis, among others. Meat-free diets tend to be higher in nutrients which can help prevent certain diseases. Of course, this is only achievable when eating a balanced diet.
Meat has become quite an expensive commodity, therefore replacing it with other sources of protein can really help you save. So if you are on a strict budget, the lockdown meat-free challenge could be a fantastic option both for your health and your pocket. Try to replace meat with more affordable sources of protein such as beans, lentils, chickpeas and eggs.
There is a common misconception that food cannot be delicious without meat, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Once you learn how to cook and experiment with meat-free dishes, or even develop recipes of your own, you'll discover that veggie-based dishes can be quite delicious and filling.
If you just want to try out the meat-free challenge, make a list of meat-free recipes to try at home while on the challenge. Choose well balanced meals comprising all the major food groups to benefit the most from this eating plan.
Lentils are easy to cook and are an affordable source of protein and nutrients. Try this simple and delicious recipe for lentil soup!

Plaka is situated on the piazza at Eastgate Shopping Centre. Standing out starkly against a collection of fast food restaurants, Plaka is the home of Mediterranean eating at Eastgate. Newly refurbished to offer patrons an even more authentic taste of the Greek islands, Plaka Eastgate is spacious and inviting. With shades of crisp white and ocean blue, their decor immediately transports you to another place. This is the ideal spot for a quiet Sunday lunch with the family, date night or a celebratory dinner.
Plaka has been delivering authentic Greek cuisine to Joburg foodies for over 26 years. Their menu is generous, offering a variety of traditional meze, fish dishes and vegetarian dips. Made from the freshest ingredients, their food is simple yet delicious. Having eaten our way through the menu, we recommend the meze platter for two, a hearty feast of pita bread, assorted dips, falafel, handcut chips, tomato salad and grilled halloumi. Paired with a chilled glass of white wine, this is more than satisfying. Sit and talk for hours over this meal with loved ones for a true Greek dining experience.
Plaka's dessert menu is equally enticing, featuring classic Greek pastries, ice cream and rich, creamy yoghurt served with crushed nuts and honey. The Eastgate branch also treats their patrons to a special palate cleanser in between mains and dessert - slices of chilled watermelon sprinkled with cinnamon. Overall, their service is welcoming and attentive. It is definitely worth a visit!
Once you have devoured your meal and thoroughly soaked up the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere at Plaka Eastgate, pop into their on-site deli. Here, you will find the best imported products to make your own Greek feast at home, along with a selection of home-made meals, biscuits and other sweet delights. It's this little touch of homeliness that sets Plaka apart from the rest.
There are two other Plaka venues in Gauteng to visit on your great Greek eating adventures. Click here for more information.
Just a few blocks away from Plaka at Eastgate you will find its rival, Mythos. Located on the square at Bedford Centre, this authentic Greek restaurant recently reopened its doors to welcome in patrons, old and new. Their newly refurbished decor is evocative of a Mediterranean palace, with opulent drapery, generous seating and romantic lighting.
Mythos first opened in 2006 and has since expanded across Joburg at various venues. However, their branch at Bedford Centre has always maintained an air of fine dining without sacrificing a family-friendly atmosphere. There is almost always a celebration to be had at Mythos, such as an anniversary dinner or their 'Big Fat Greek Evenings' which take place on the last Saturday of every month. Complete with a fantastic feast, live music and dancing, performances from trained belly dancers and breaking of the plates, Mythos offers their guests far more than just a dining experience. The warmth of family and friends exudes in everything they do.
But, speaking of the food, Mythos has both a set menu and main menu. Featuring an array of traditional salads, dips, sides and main meals, there is no shortage of Greek flavour here. Mythos prides itself on using only the best imported ingredients, evident in the flavours and quality of their food. And, like any good Greek restaurant, sharing is the name of the game here. The meze platter for two includes keftethes, fillet souvlaki, chicken souvlaki, prawns, calamari, yiro, peri-peri chicken livers, tzatziki, taramosalata and pita bread. While quite protein heavy, this platter can easily be paired with a village Greek salad to find its perfect balance.
After a filling Greek feast, what could you possibly have room leftover for? Gelato, of course! Mythos at Bedford Centre boasts an enticing gelato counter, stocked with a variety of flavours. We say give them all a try to find your favourite. From chocolate hazelnut to pistachio, funfetti and even tiramisu flavours, they have something to soothe any sweet tooth.
Find your nearest Mythos branch here.
So, there you have it! All that our two favourite Greek giants have to offer. We'll let you make the final verdict on who the ultimate winner of this challenge is. Opa!
With the new summer menu from Mugg & Bean, there is no better place to get your fill of vegetarian breakfast. The menu has an array of vegetarian meals which includes noodle bowls, soups, sandwiches and folded fillers. But when stopping by for breakfast, served all day, there is nothing better than the Benedict Bowl. This dish features couscous tossed with wilted baby spinach, blistered cherry tomatoes, scatterings of spring onion, basil pesto and avo, all topped with creamy hollaindaise sauce and poached eggs.

Vegetarians of all creeds will feel right at home at tashas come breakfast time. Their menu has a vast amount of meat-free options from healthy fruit salads to hearty omelettes. Our favourite of these options is the Classic French Toast. Expect Brioche French toast smothered in berries, cinnamon sugar and maple flavoured syrup. Finish off your sweet treat with a glass of freshly squeezed juice or strong tea.
If you're looking for a wide variety of sweet and savoury breakfast choices, then Doppio Zero is the spot for you. Their menu features delicious breakfast bowls, cheesy omelettes, sweet flapjacks, healthy scrambles and simple eggs on toast. But if you choose only one thing, let it be the Babylon Bowl with pealafals, a perfectly poached egg, hummus, labneh, Lebanese salsa, flatbread and chilli oil.
Lexi's Healthy Eatery offers a range of healthy and nutritious food for all dietary requirements. Most of their meat-free options can be adapted to suit either a vegan or a vegetarian palate. Try their Sexy Spinach Scramble on your next visit. This can be made with either tofu or an egg scrambled with spinach, kale, parsley, roasted tomato, avocado, savoury granola and rye toast.
Jackson's Real Food Market is the perfect eatery for the health-conscious. They offer a variety of vegan, gluten-free, low-carb, dairy-free and ovo-lacto vegetarian meals. Their tasty and nutritious breakfasts are served all day so you can stop by for brekkie no matter how late you sleep in. The Something Amazing meal, with poached eggs, cashew hummus and mixed veggies on sourdough bread, is just what you need to start the day.
Fruits And Roots is a health store and vegetarian restaurant in Bryanston. Despite being a health food store, this is the place to go to when you're craving a classic South African breakfast. The Big Boer Brekkie has everything you need to full you up. Think toast topped with fried eggs, soy sausages, sauteed mushrooms, roasted potatoes and grilled tomatoes served with salsa. Does breakfast get any more satisfying?
The Secret Garden in Benoni is the perfect getaway for vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Tucked away at Uncle Tim's Centre, this luscious garden is the perfect spot for an early morning breakfast or tasty brunch. The Breakfast Waffle is a must-try. The vegetarian version of this herb-infused waffle is topped with an egg, mushrooms and a cheesy welsh rarebit.

Where is your favourite spot to grab a vegetarian breakfast? Let us know in the comments section below!
Finding a restaurant that comfortably caters to meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike is rare. What's even more unlikely is to find a restaurant of this nature situated in the heart of the East Rand. We recently discovered a gem of this sort at Uncle Tim's Centre in Benoni.
The Secret Garden offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The perfect alternative to an overbooked inner city restaurant, The Secret Garden provides serene dining under the shade of lush trees. We recommend sitting outdoors in warmer months. Greeted by the restaurant's resident cat, their garden seating is spacious and inviting. However, the interior has just as much character, with vintage wooden dining tables and quirky chandeliers. Either way, you are sure to receive good service from their friendly staff.
Arno Steenkamp, the owner and chef of the restaurant is vegan himself, so there is utmost care taken to prepare all dishes. His food ethos preaches that ingredients are not limited to food items, but include joy, kindness and inspiration. Taking his time to prepare healthy, thoughtful meals, Arno delivers his passion on a plate. The restaurant offers a set menu, as well as weekly specials. Often experiments in flavour and cuisine, these specials give diners a unique look into Chef Arno's diverse skill set in the kitchen. Think vegan Butternut Soup, Spiral Veggie Tart, Mushroom Wellington and Blueberry Mousse, yum!
Meat munchers, you have not been excluded from the Secret Garden's culinary excellence. Their set menu features a number of meat options, including a full English breakfast, a German pork feast, gourmet burgers and smoked trout fishcakes. Those of you who eat dairy may also enjoy a Secret Garden signature milkshake (or two!) Slurp down a traditional vanilla, strawberry or lime shake while waiting for your meal. Alternatively, give their peanut butter or Oreo milkshake a try. Smooth and sweet, this is the perfect way to enjoy your time at this unlikely foodie hotspot.
Many of the dishes on the Secret Garden's menu are available in vegetarian and vegan options. For instance, you can order vegan filled pancakes with creamy spinach and avocado, or the meat version, which comes with savoury mince and a beer and mustard cheese sauce.
When we visited, we ordered the Ploughman's Platter - two generous wedges of cheddar cheese, served with pickles, grapes, pretzels, dipping chutney, tomatoes and homebaked beer bread. You can keep it meat-free, or add a serving of Hickory Ham or sliced biltong. We opted for the ham, which paired wonderfully with the strong cheese and sweet grapes. However, the star of this plate was the bread. With subtle under notes of beer, this dense loaf was so good that we ordered a second to finish off the scraps of the plate. The Secret Garden will definitely be hearing from us again in the near future!
Allowing friends and family to gather at a place where almost anything is possible when it comes to food, The Secret Garden is paving the way for inclusive dining in the East Rand. The drive to this quaint restaurant is well worth it, so make the trip as soon as you can.
Follow The Secret Garden on Facebook for more information.

The Livewell Range already features an array of snack packs, wholegrains and frozen foods. With reduced salt, sugar and saturated fats, these products are ideal for people looking for healthier alternatives to their favourite snacks and meals. The Livewell Range is also vegetarian and vegan-friendly, with a number of guilt-free products to tuck into. The newly improved beetroot hummus is one of our favourites. Vegan-friendly, low in fat and full of flavour, this spread is the perfect accompaniment to a freshly baked wholewheat loaf or seed crackers. We also love PnP's Cranberry and Cherry Rooibos Tea, with energy boosting properties and sweet fruity notes. Paired with a bowl of rolled overnight oats or chia pudding topped with berries, this is breakfast fit for a health conscious king or queen.
Preparing your daily smoothie can be a task and a half. All the peeling, chopping, de-seeding and blending takes up a significant amount of time. When driving through Jan Smuts Avenue in Blairgowrie, it's easy to pass by The Fussy Vegan without a second glance. But this vegan eatery, hidden away at a petrol station, is certainly worth another glance, and a visit. Serving up a delightful range of vegan snacks, burgers and confectionery, this is a one-stop vegan haven. Their menu boasts several bowl options, but we are enamored with the Poke Bowl. With sushi rice, mango chunks, cashews, creamy avo, edamame beans, teriyaki soy sauce, sushi ginger and carrot roses, this is a must-try vegan delight.
Doppio Zero has become the go-to for vegan and vegetarian meals. With the wide and delicious vegan offerings, we are not surprised. One of the items on their vegan menu is the Rainbow Bowl. Served with a trio of quinoa, pearled couscous and buckwheat, lightly tossed with chimichurri tofu, roasted beetroot, blistered cherry tomatoes, avo and nigella seeds. This delightful bowl is dressed with a creamy green hummus and an earthy tahini drizzle. The nuttiness of the grains combine beautifully with the sweet vegetables and the nigella seeds add a finishing touch that perfects the dish.
This vegan eatery in Bedfordview has grown in popularity since its initial opening. Serving an all day breakfast, thick and creamy milkshakes, gourmet burgers and indulgent hot drinks, this is a must visit for any vegan or vegetarian. They prepare six sumptuous Power Bowls that are all worth a try. We recommend the Falafel Bowl, with deconstructed falafel mix, cherry tomatoes, marinated cucumber brunoise, red onion, olives and grilled aubegine. All of this is lightly tossed in a creamy coriander and tahini dressing.
Mugg & Bean has long been a South African favourite. With their giant muffins, bottomless coffee and generous cake displays, we can see why. The restaurant now serves a selection of salads, smoothies and summer slushes in an effort to bring healthier options to their menu. One of our favourite bowls is The Benedict Bowl. This delight features fluffy cous cous, wilted baby spinach, roasted baby tomatoes and slivers of avocado topped with poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and basil pesto.
This restaurant caters to all dietary requirements, from vegan and vegetarian to meat eaters. This makes the eatery a go-to for any group of mixed eaters. Often left out vegetarians will adore the many options to choose from. One such option is the Farmer's Breakfast Bowl. This early morning meal is a mishmash of grilled mushrooms and tomatoes, roasted potatoes and avocado, blanketed in vegan hollandaise and sumac. All this is topped with a poached egg, but vegans may opt for a tofu scramble instead.
Another restaurant accommodating all dietary requirements, tashas is a solid choice for any vegetarian or health fundi. The focus of this restaurant is simple food made with simple and good quality ingredients. The freshness of the ingredients can be tasted in every bite of the Feta Quinoa Fritter Salad. Comprising of quinoa, feta and pea fritters served on a bed of labneh, mixed seeds and nuts, gem lettuce, cucumber, chives and cauliflower, all drizzled in a lemon vinaigrette.

We all know a good pizza has the distinct taste and flavour of a fire oven. But a good base and tomato sauce can take you a long way.
Let's explore a bit of Johannesburg and find the best pizza around, where you can have a good slice or two (or maybe eight).
For delicious and authentic Italian pizza, head to Piza ē Vino.
They have perfected the art of pizza bases, which are topped with fresh ingredients. Their menu is loaded with creative choices and a wide offering, which includes vegetarian options.
They bring the true Italian flavour to reality. If you visit any of their restaurants, you will not be disappointed.
Our favourite: the James Brown.
Panarottis is a classic favourite for most Joburg residents. This is because of their welcoming attitude and yummy pizzas.
Their ingredient selection and combinations are the best. They have a wide offering from vegetarian and classic pizza to gourmet pizza. You also have the options to go for their 'half and half' and choose two different pizzas.
Panarottis is family-friendly and have an entertainment area for the children, so bring along the entire family.
For fine and fresh ingredients, try Col'Cacchio.
Their mouthwatering pizza comes from a generous menu that comprises options for every diet. This includes vegan, vegetarian and carb-conscious options.
Col'Cacchio prides themselves in taking you on a food journey that you will not forget.
Now is the time to indulge in all the delicious pizza that awaits us. Grab some friends and head out on that pizza hop.

This Greek gem, tucked away in Edenvale, makes some of the most delicious food in the east. They make pies, pastries, cheese, olives, olive oil and even supply authentic honey. Besides their olives (garlic stuffed green olives - YUM), the reason we keep coming back here is for their pies. They have three delicious vegetarian pies available in the form of spinach, halloumi and olive and feta. While their spinach pie is yummy and their halloumi pie is unique, we are suckers for the olive and feta. This pie is not nearly as salty as one would think, considering the ingredients. Instead, the feta provides a lovely creaminess and the olives have a meaty quality. These are entrenched in a buttery and flaky house-made puff pastry that is miles above any other pastry.
We all love our local Woolies. And why wouldn't we? They have amazing pre-cooked meals and meals-on-the-go, as well as baked goods, snacks and frozen meals. They also have some of the most delightful pies. Most of us love their pepper steak and roast chicken offerings. But, the spinach and feta pie has got to be one of the most amazing pies. Yes, they are that great! The filling is packed with finely cut spinach and loaded with creamy cheese. Ok, I need to stop drooling now.
This eatery has several stores located all across Joburg. I first visited them at the Oriental Plaza and have been going back to Fordsburg whenever the craving strikes. Unfortunately, when I discovered them, Google had yet to become the magic that it is today, so I didn't realise that there's a branch at my local shopping mall. The pie in question is a spinach, cheese and corn pie available in regular and cocktail sized. As wonderful as the filling is, it's the pastry that makes these pies what they are. They use a hot water pastry recipe which uses less fat than regular pastry recipes, it's hard to believe that this crumbly goodness is lower in fat. Just remember, their cheese and onion samoosas are pretty epic too.
I know, I know - you didn't expect a petrol station to make it onto this list. But you'll completely agree with this choice once you taste this mouth-watering pie. This is a mushroom and cheese pie. Now, I don't like mushrooms. They're too slimy and bitter for my liking. But the mushrooms in this pie are cooked perfectly. They come out perfectly juicy and the flavour... well, it almost tastes like bacon. I don't know how, or why, but it does. These bacony mushrooms are swimming in a thick cheese sauce. Now tell me this isn't a garage pie worth trying.
This bakery, situated in Boksburg, has become an overnight sensation. Residents of Boksburg have been flocking here to get their hands on all the sensational bread, cakes, tarts, biscuits and pies. Their spinach pie is rather large and stuffed with spinach galore. This is certainly one of the better spinach pies in Joburg, you can taste the freshness of the ingredients. If you're still in doubt, just know that George comes from a long family of bakers. Said family owns and runs none other than Croydon Bakery, who are renown for their pies.
While you can't get these pies warm and ready from the store, you can buy them frozen. Fry's has a big range of vegan and vegetarian frozen food. This range includes a selection of pies such as the Pepper Steak Style Pies, Mutton Style Pies and Country Mushroom Pies. Our favourite has to be the Sausage Rolls. These are soya and wheat sausage 'meat' rolled in puff pastry. Just put them in the oven for a bit and they're good to go. And let me add, they're so tasty that even meat eaters will love them. You can find Fry's at most big retailers.
Doppio Zero in Bedfordview is located at what can only be described as an odd shopping centre on Hawley Road. The "centre" is not quite a centre, so much as a group of shops and restaurants huddled together on a tree-lined street. The Doppio Zero is on its own end of this centre, offering an almost secluded atmosphere.
Patrons have the option of indoor or outdoor seating. We don't recommend the indoor seating as it offers a splendid view of their display of pastries, breads and cakes. For your own health and waistline, rather go for the outdoor seating where you can feel the fresh air, get some much needed vitamin D and have a spectacular view of the green shrubbery lining the street.
We were (unfortunately) seated inside, with a perfect view of their display. They had various freshly-baked breads, croissants, cookies and cakes that simply just make your mouth water. Thankfully, the menu was handed to us quickly, so we didn't have to spend much time drooling like a bull dog staring at a steak.
For drinks, I decided to try the Cookies and Caramel Steamer (I guess I couldn't resist the decadence of Doppio Zero after all), while my partner decided to get the Filter Coffee. The steamer came out with caramel sauce dripping off the rim of the glass which was covered in cookie crumbs whereas the coffee was its exact opposite, strong and bitter.
We chose to share a starter, as we wanted to save room for dessert and opted for the Mozzarella Croquettes. One can never have too much cheese. These were fillets of mozzarella in a crispy layer of crumbs served with a creamy and spicy dip. It was simply delicious and perfect to whet the appetite.
For mains, I chose the Rainbow Bowl. This is a trio of quinoa, couscous, buckwheat, roast beetroot, chimichurri tofu, baby tomatoes, avocado, nigella seeds and green hummus. The chewiness of the buckwheat paired beautifully with the sweetness of the beetroot and the tartness of the tomato. The hummus added a splendid creaminess to the dish and the nigella seeds, a little je ne sais quoi.
My partner opted for the Pollo al Forno. This is a baked pasta dish with grilled chicken, garlic, sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, basil, onion, rigatoni, and parmesan in creamy sauce. The garlic and tomatoes compliment the chicken perfectly while the mushrooms add some interesting texture, all of this is made even better with the copious amounts of cheese. As I said before, there can never be too much cheese.
After the mains, we were simply too stuffed to have any more. Which is a pity as I still dream of that amazing cake display that had cheesecakes, chocolate cakes and what looked like the most decadent slice of red velvet cake. I am still drooling just thinking about those cakes. Oh well, all the more reason to go back.
What I loved about this restaurant were all the options. I could choose to sit outside in the warm breeze or opt for a more secluded spot indoors. I, as a vegetarian, also had a large variety of options to choose from. Doppio Zero also has a nice selection of vegan options including a pizza and pasta dish. This is a nice change from the usual choice of a green salad or chips. There was also a wide range of options for meat lovers and a range of choices for the sweet tooth. I also loved that one can pick up a loaf of bread here or a handful of croissants if you chose to dine at home.
Overall this was a great dining experience and I will definitely be back for a cup of coffee and that slice of cake. Or maybe even two.

Start the day out with a heartfelt breakfast served in bed. One of our favourite love-themed breakfasts is the good old-fashioned egg in a hole. If you are not familiar with this ingenious brekkie mash up, all it entails is cutting a hole in a slice of toast in which to cook your egg! Upscale this simple dish for Valentine's Day by using a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Or take it the extra mile by adding rosa tomatoes, portabello mushrooms, pecorino cheese and a few basil leaves to the dish. You can pick up these authentic Italian ingredients from Super Sconto in Orange Grove. This Mediterranean deli stocks everything from dry pastas, to tomato sauces and fine cheeses.
Get yourself a set of heart-shaped cookie cutters from Mr Price Home.
We are slowly reaching the last quarter of summer. This probably means that you and your significant other have had it up to your ears with green salads, fruit bowls and healthy eating plans. Spice things up a bit on the day of love by serving up a refreshing tomato soup with a kick of chilli. It can be served lukewarm or pipping hot with a melty three-cheese rye bread sarmie. The soup does take some time to prepare though, so it's best to do it the day before.
For the very best rye bread in the city, check out our list of the best bread spots in Joburg.
If you are lucky enough to be seeing your partner for a romantic Valentine's dinner date, go all out for them. For meat lovers, we recommend a classic roast beef with crispy baby potatoes and balsamic glazed asparagus stalks. Alternatively, whip up a vegetarian pasta dish for your veggie-mad Valentine. Our favourite is a spinach and ricotta lasagne served with a glass of chilled white wine. Although this dish is quite labour intensive, it is well worth it in the end. Your partner is sure to appreciate the labour of love, too. To save on time, buy pre-cooked imported Italian lasagna sheets from the Cremalat cheese factory in Edenvale. They also stock over 80 different gourmet cheeses, so you have no excuse not to create the cheesiest lasagna ever made.
Everyone deserves a little something sweet on Valentine's Day. Even if you aren't Next Great Baker material, you can whip up a delicious treat for you and your partner to share. Try your hand at stained glass jam filled biscuits to score extra points on the day. They are deceptively easy to make and are well worth the effort. Serve them straight from the oven with a sweet cup of tea. And you can make use of your heart-shaped cookie cutters once again!
We know that not everyone is blessed with talent in the kitchen. So, why not book yourself and your partner a cooking class? That way, not only do you learn a new skill set, but you get to spend quality time doing something fun and adventurous with your sweetheart. Check out these awesome cooking classes in the city.
Alternatively, you can go the DIY route and teach yourself to cook in the run-up to Valentine's Day. While you may not master the technique of flambe or bake the perfect croissant by then, you can surely impress your significant other by poaching them an early morning egg.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Often our taste buds aren't aligned with our healthy eating intentions. We kid ourselves that nutritious equals bland and boring, which is exactly why Lexi's Healthy Eatery has been booming since they day they opened their doors in June 2018. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, banting, paleo or just trying to make small healthier choices everyday, this little eatery has you covered.
Lexi's Eatery is the brainchild of Lexi Monzeglio, a trained plant-based chef and health fanatic. Her creativity is evident when looking at the menu. For breakfast we recommend the sunshine glow bowl (seasonal citrus fruit with coconut cream, biscuit crumb and granola topped with caramel) or the farmer's breakfast bowl (tofu scramble, grilled mushrooms, roasted potatoes, grilled cherry tomatoes and fresh avocado with a vegan hollandaise). Moving over to mains, dig into a slow-roasted cauliflower steak (served with chimichurri, lentils, and fresh mixed greens and beetroot). And the bus doesn't stop there. Other fascinating items include the warrior burger, the smashed falafel and the black rice porcini risotto.
At the time of writing, Lexi's Healthy Eatery has a BYOB (bring your own booze) policy until they've sorted out their liquor licence. But who needs alcohol when there's red velvet and golden "mylk" lattes, vegan superfood Horlicks and an array of juices and smoothies to choose from? On top of that Lexi's has taken a stand against plastic and introduced stainless steel straws and bio-degradable packaging to their restaurant.
All in all, Lexi's Healthy Eatery is a rocking place to get your plant-based diet on without skimping on good taste. Meat eaters shouldn't feel left out, however: while the menu makes little use of meat products, there is a bit of fish here and a burger there. Do yourself a favour and go check 'em out – you won't be sorry!
