The Bread Basket at Greenstone Mall serves up traditional breakfasts with a Mediterranean twist. Plus, their bread and cookies are to die for, so you might as well pay them a visit. Their standout breakfast is the Banana and Peanut Butter French Toast Croissant which is served with vanilla ice cream. Not particularly nutritious, but this is perfect for when you need a little sweetening up on a Saturday morning. The Bread Basket also offers weekend breakfast specials featuring all the greats; bacon, sausage, grilled tomato, chips, toast and two eggs. Paired with one of their gourmet flavoured coffees, this is as good as breakfast gets in the East Rand.

This trendy waffle house just opened in October 2019 at Flamingo’s Nest Boutique Hotel in Benoni. All their meals are made fresh and can be adapted to suit your dietary needs. There are four breakfast waffle options, but our top pick is the healthy Yogi. A crispy waffle stack, drizzled with golden syrup, topped with Greek yogurt, granola and fresh fruit of the day. If you want something more substantial, try their Beef Tagliattan waffle - wild rocket, topped with caramelised red onion, rare grilled sirloin, balsamic reduction and crumbed feta cheese, served on a crispy waffle base and garnished with micro greens!

Another Edenvale favourite is La Tazzina. This Alice In Wonderland themed cafe is well hidden, but well worth the hunt to find it. Their adorable garden makes the perfect setting for a slow breakfast with friends or family. While they are mostly famous for their cakes and pastries, this quiet cafe also serves up a mean Mediterranean breakfast with your choice of Italian coffee. We love La Tazzina's omelette options, which range from basic three egg and cheese, to the Popeye - an omelette filled with spinach, feta and mushrooms! However, our favourite is the La Tazzina open omelette - topped with mozzarella, bocconcini, rosa tomatoes and homemade pesto. It is breakfast perfection.

Next up, there is a buffet of fluffy scrambled egg, bacon, mushrooms, cocktail tomatoes and freshly baked croissants. And if that wasn’t enough to delight you, tuck into a sweet platter filled with assorted bakery delights.

Harpers Restaurant at Eastgate Mall is a long-standing favourite with residents of the east. Their breakfast menu is varied and generous, offering everything from healthy granola, to full Farmhouse spreads. There is the traditional English breakfast for when you're mighty hungry - fried or poached eggs, bacon, beef sausages, grilled tomato, large brown mushroom and grilled onion, served with toast and preserves. Harpers also caters for vegetarians with meat-free French toast, Spanish style eggs and fried brinjal, mushroom, spinach and grilled cherry tomatoes on toast. Sample their selection of herbal Twinnings teas with a macaron or gingerbread man for breakfast pudding.

George's Bread & Co. recently won the Best of Ekhuruleni award for Best Bakery, Best Coffee Shop, Best New Restaurant and Best Bakery with Cafe. If that wasn't reason enough to get you to travel to Boksburg, then come and indulge in their array of breakfast pastries. Apple and Custard Danishes, Chelsea Buns and Muffins greet you at the cafe counter. George's cafe haven't skimped on the tea and coffee either. We recommend the Dirty Chai Latte - a shot of espresso muddled with Chai spices and topped with frothed milk or cream. Don't forget to pick up a loaf of their 100% Sourdough bread or a pastry to take home.

Finally, we have BemBom - an authentic Portuguese coffee shop, bakery and cafe. Their slogan "The Sweet Taste of Portugal" is apt, as their menu features a great selection of Porto-Mediterranean dishes. They are also one of the most reasonable breakfast spots in the East Rand, with branches in Bedfordview, Meadowdale and Benoni. For something a little outside of the breakfast box, try the Papas de Milho Amarelo - freshly cooked polenta with spinach, mushrooms, bacon and a poached egg, topped with grated Parmesan cheese. It's porridge with a difference!

The Best Of Ekurhuleni is a reader's choice award granted to businesses around the East Rand. According to the organisation, "The Best of Ekurhuleni Reader’s Choice Awards were established to inspire the residents of Ekurhuleni to celebrate the best of the best and inspire growth and prosperity in local business and organizations."
These awards are a great way for locals to learn more about their surroundings and to explore the best Ekurhuleni has to offer. While we can't mention all the award winners, we will discuss some of our favourites of the worthy winners.
Offering an assortment of delectable baked goods, treats and confectionery, George's is probably one of our favourite bakeries in Gauteng. We are nothing short of in love with the soft and airy Red Velvet Cupcakes, chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies and perfect Cheesecake. It seems every time we pop by they have something new to make our mouths water. As such, it is no surprise that they take home the awards for not one, but six categories. These include Best Coffee Shop, Best Bakery, Best Pies, Best Place For Party Platters, Best Bakery With Café and joint Best New Restaurant.
Tucked away in Benoni lies a beautiful Victorian house adorned with rose arches, crisp white window panes and a giant oak tree. This home has been renovated into one of the best bakeries in the East. In fact, according to Best Of Ekurhuleni, they are the Best Tea Garden. After sampling their delightful brunch, high tea and confectionery, we couldn't agree more. Spend a breezy summer afternoon lounging under a shady tree while indulging in a perfectly baked macaron. We recommend the granadilla or raspberry, but those more daring can opt for the salty sweet bacon treat.
East Rand Mall is the proud winner of Best Shopping Mall. Situated in Boksburg, this mall is home to several other winners, including Best Clothing Store For Him (Edgars) and Best Accessories (Lovisa). Featuring 180 retailers, restaurants and entertainment hubs, this mall has been the go-to for East Randers since 1992. Recently renovated, this mall now has even more parking space and a more modernised feel.
This bar meets pub, located in Modderfontein and Benoni, has won two awards in this year's Best Of Ekurhuleni. They take home the prestigious title of Best Craft Beer Pub. With nine beers on tap, 17 largers, 21 ales and a range of other suds on offer, we are not surprised. They also have a pretty good gin list, which is why they also took the Best Craft Gin Bar title. While sampling their bitter beer and ample gin, make sure to try the Green Pizza or Peanut Butter Burger. They may sound weird, but they're worth a taste.

When you think of Benoni, what comes to mind? We are almost 100% sure that it's not a Victorian-style home, renovated into one of Joburg's finest patisseries. However, don't let the location of this delightful cake shop and cafe deter you from paying them a visit. The Victorian Secret is all about whimsy - from the brick facade, to the magical rose garden and, of course, the delicately crafted pastries. It's the perfect place to host an Alice in Wonderland themed high tea or birthday party.
From the street, you are greeted by a magnificent oak tree and shady tables. Sit outside on a sunny day to catch the breeze. The decor and features, from the classic window panes to the white tables and chairs, pay homage to a bygone era. If you have ever wanted to step back in time, this is the place to do so. The only thing missing from this scene is a frilly parasol and top hat. (We dare you to dress up in Victorian regalia on your first visit, just for the fun of it!)
The Victorian Secret's kitchen is steered by culinary captains, Chef Marike and Head Chef, Sarah. These two ladies are the masterminds behind all of The Victorian Secret's artisan, hand-crafted pastries, cakes, cookies and breads. In keeping with the times, TVS offers gluten-free, Banting, vegetarian and Halaal options. Have their expert bakers craft your perfect wedding, birthday or graduation cake. They can even whip up an impressive sugar-spun French croquembouche, decorated with pretty edible flowers. These light choux pastry puffs, filled with your choice of flavoured creme patissiere, make the perfect showstopper dessert.
If you try only one sweet treat from The Victorian Secret, we recommend a brightly coloured macaron. While these classic French meringues have popped up all over Joburg in recent years, TVS is one of the few patisseries who know how to make them just right. Paired with a strong cup of tea, a macaron is the ideal afternoon indulgence.
Speaking of tea, The Victorian Secret serves up a savoury meets sweet afternoon tea for groups of up to 20 guests. Playing on the traditional 19th Century high tea pioneered by the Duchess of Bedford, with cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, flavoured teas and even Victorian crockery. For only *R200 a head, this high tea is one of the most affordable you can find in the city. That is not to take anything away from the quality of the menu. The Victorian Secret serves up high tea just as good as any patisserie in Joburg North, so keep them in mind for when you feel the need to fight off the afternoon slump.
If high tea isn't your cup of tea, then take a peek into The Victorian Secret's set breakfast menu. A starter of homemade granola served with fresh seasonal fruit and yoghurt, accompanied by bottomless filter coffee and tea or one jug of freshly squeezed fruit juice to share between six people. Mains offer you fluffy scrambled egg, bacon, mushroom, cocktail tomatoes and a freshly baked croissant. If that wasn't enough to fill your belly, then tuck into a sweet platter filled with assorted bakery delights! You have never had breakfast this good, we guarantee.
