The curries are amazing, and you'll definitely want to mop up every last bit of sauce with their traditional breads or rice. Curry

If there is one thing you should always look for in a partner - something more important than a pretty smile and a sense of humour – it's good taste in food. A relationship is only as strong as the gut you've built together during the first six months of dating. Besides, you don't want to end up marrying someone who thinks that frozen veg and pilchards on toast make for a great Sunday lunch, now do you?

On this important note, I can proclaim that my relationship with my beautiful lady is built on the chubby cheeks we've developed over the years of eating everything from vegan buffets in Magaliesburg to crispy beef in Cyrildene. Culinary adventures should never be taken alone and that is why I booked my lovely lady and I a table at the Raj in Nicolway.

Indian food is my kryptonite... especially if it's good Indian food. I'm talking about paneer swimming in tomato gravies, garlic naans falling from the heavens and khichdi like it's just arrived from a wood burning oven in Telangana. It is safe to say that I found all of these elements - which makes for a great Indian meal - at The Raj. That's without mentioning the impeccable service and good prices.

Indian Food

But let's talk about the menu, shall we? There's vindaloo (which actually comes from Portugal, fun fact), jalfrezi stir fry and, one of our personal favourites, korma. My top pick on the menu would be the Kerely Lamb which is a lamb shank sautéed with whole garam masala, ginger and garlic then cooked in onion and tomato gravy on a slow fire... doesn't that sound amazing? But with that said, you can't go to an Indian restaurant and not explore the vegetarian selections. Paneer is my baby and I can't get enough of it. Do yourself a favour and have the Palak Paneer which is paneer (made in-house) with spinach, cooked garlic, cumin and cream cream. Go the extra mile and order some naan bread with the Palak Paneer. Also, The Raj has a pretty big wine list so be sure to have a look at it. Red wine and Indian food is what life is all about.

As for dessert, check out their homemade milk dumplings, served in rose and cardamom syrup... I'm not big on dessert but the dumplings hit the spot. All in all, do yourself a favour and book a table for your lovely and yourself at The Raj and work on those relationship guts, together.

Indian Restaurants In Joburg

Are you looking for the best Indian restaurants in Joburg? Say no more, say no more! Come with us on a spicy trip through the city of Gold in search of the best Indian food this side of New Delhi!

Royal Punjab

My family and I went to this small Indian restaurant in Heathway Square, Blackheath, to celebrate a birthday. I loved their lamb korma with basmati rice and the delicious garlic and herb naan bread. Depending on what you order, it can be a bit pricey, but the portions are generous. I felt like I needed to be rolled out of the restaurant.

Red Chilli Spice

If you are looking for great quality but affordable Indian food along with ice-cold craft beer, then make a stop at Red Chilli Spice in Craighall. They have lovely views over the suburb and indoor and outdoor seating. The chicken tikka masala is always excellent.

Thava

I have always enjoyed the spicy delights from Thava in Norwood. This is definitely one of my favourite spots when I'm on the hunt for some delicious curry to warm me up. As lamb korma is one of my favourites, that's what I prefer to order here — pieces of lamb cooked in a cashew nut and cream sauce. But, there are loads of other options on the menu too, including vegetarian starters and mains.

The Raj Gold Reef City

From bhoona to karai, The Raj at Gold Reef City Casino has it all. The lamb rogan josh is popular but what really sets the Raj apart is their game menu. Yes, you heard right, they serve dishes like ostrich tikka and springbok tikka masala. Groundbreaking!

Classic India At Cedar Square

For authentic North Indian cuisine, head down to The Classic India at Cedar Square and experience India right here in Joburg. The Bhuma Gosth Kalimirch must be mentioned — chunks of boneless lamb roasted in tawa with black pepper, cooked in the chef’s special gravy. The restaurant also has an extensive selection of fine wine from the Western Cape to complement your meal.

Vikram’s Banjaara

This Indian restaurant has some of the best curry I have ever tasted! We ordered out from them for a friend’s birthday and everyone enjoyed it! They have a large selection to choose from, like samosa starters, chicken dishes, fish and prawn dishes, lamb and even vegetarian options! Plus, the naan breads are extra tasty.

Taste Of India

Taste of India in Bryanston brings you a great selection of Indian cuisine. If you can handle the heat, choose one of their curries. They also do a fish vindaloo with kingklip. But, if all this sounds way too hot for you, don't worry because all dishes are prepared mild and medium as well. Look out for their lunch takeaway specials and Sunday buffets.

Dosa Hut Fordsburg

Nothing beats a good dosa — those flat rice pancakes are just divine. As the name suggests, that's Dosa Hut's speciality so head to this gem of a restaurant in the heart of Fordsburg for some delicious and super-filling food. It's a no-frills kind of place, but if it's good food you're after, you'll be all set here.
