As restaurant prices continue to soar, finding a spot that offers a good lunch or dinner minus an exorbitant price tag becomes tough - we get it. And if the inexpensive food is not only delicious but also interesting, and perhaps even outside of your previous dining experience, all the better! Here’s a little collection of some trendy, budget-friendly restaurants of every kind that we've stumbled upon in Joburg. So, happy feasting! Oh, and you’re welcome!

Budget-Friendly Restaurants

The Schwarma Co.

The Schwarma Co. in Norwood’s bustling Grant Avenue serves the best of Mediterranean cuisine. The starter menu includes a variety of dips and spreads accompanied by falafel (get seven balls for only R40) and other delicacies. The lamb schwarma, at only R85 and filled with all the extras you desire, is a must-have.

Jintara Thai Sushi Dim Sum

Looking for budget-friendly restaurants without skimping on quality? We've got you! If Thai food coupled with casual elegance is your thing, then this is your place! Erawan offers top-notch Thai dishes that present flavours and textures that are sure to please your taste buds. While the sushi is a bit on the pricy side, everything else is very much pocket-friendly. What’s more, is that they aren’t yet licensed to serve alcohol, so feel free to take your own bottle of vino to sip on without being charged a corkage fee (for now).

Where: Riverside Shopping Centre, corner of Bryanston Drive & The River Road, Bryanston, Johannesburg.

Dylan’s Restaurant

This upscale restaurant is a hidden gem of note in our opinion. Every dish we've had here has been of superior quality, and the more-than-reasonable price tags have made us a regular! Everything is prepared with the freshest, finest ingredients, which shine through in the dishes. The ambiance is comfortable and laidback but at the same time trendy, which is awesome. It’s great for any meal of the day, or even just for cake and coffee. Oh, and they have speedy Wi-Fi, so it’s a fab spot to work from, too!

Budget-Friendly Restaurants

Gema Trattoria

None of the pasta al forno dishes (lasagne, chicken lasagne, cannelloni or the parmigiana) exceeds R60, and they are all worth the 20 minutes preparation time, because this is classic Italian fare at its best. One could try the Napoletana, Arrabbiata or the beautifully simple Carbonara pasta for under R60 too. Only a few pizzas, such as the Mario with prosciutto crudo and the Mediterranean with bacon and spinach and feta exceed R60 – the rest are all around the R58 mark and are authentic and worth making the trip to Kensington

Where: 143 Queen St, Kensington, Johannesburg, 2094

Super Sconto

Super Sconto is a family-run restaurant and supermarket where you can pick up all kinds of goodies. The upstairs deli section is where you can find what’s arguably the best sandwich in town: pick a freshly baked panini (small or large) and choose your toppings from the deli counter. Super Sconto also has daily pasta specials, so be on the lookout for those. They’re only open for breakfast and lunch, so just keep this in mind the next time you’re thinking of heading over.

Robby's Place

Robby's Place is a Restaurant and Tavern in Pimville Soweto, located opposite the Soweto Country Club and en-route to the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, The place where the famous Freedom Charter was signed and soon to become one of Soweto's tourism hotspots. The menu is extensive, offering everything from traditional pizzas and pasta to meat dishes as well as seafood. While some dishes may be a tad pricy, there are many that are super-affordable. Galata Bakery

Quaint and warm, with the titillating scent of fresh-baked goods to whet your appetite, this is a welcoming Turkish eatery experience in the middle of Joburg. It’s a coffee shop with a deli that has foods like börek, simit, croissants, cupcakes and pies. A lip-smackingly delicious and generously portioned meal is the Tantuni Turkish bread filled with beef, tomato, red onion, parsley and red peppers. It’s moreish yet filling for just R60. You can also opt to have the same fillings in a lavash (a flatbread) or you could order the Tantuni Turkish bread with a side of chips for an extra R10. This is real value for money.

Are you looking for game meat restaurants in and around the city of Johannesburg? You're in luck! We've eaten our way through the good, the bad and the ugly to bring you the best of the best. Without further ado, let's introduce you to our favourites.

Carnivore — Muldersdrift

Carnivore in Muldersdrift is a meat lover’s paradise! They offer a wide variety to choose from (depending on availability) with everything from traditional meats like pork, beef, and chicken to game meats like crocodile, zebra, and giraffe. If you’re taking some herbivores along then you will be thrilled to hear that there is something for everyone as vegetarian dishes are also available. Fun fact: Carnivore is Arnold Schwarzenegger's favourite game meat restaurants in South Africa.

Tribes African Grill Steak House — Emperors Palace

The Out of Africa section of Tribes African Grill Steak House menu offers a seasonal variety of African game. From their ostrich burger (filled with a 180g ostrich patty, lettuce, and tomato) and their kudu and impala steaks and ostrich medallions to the Game Platter served with a selection of game that is basted and grilled to perfection, there is a great selection for you to choose from if you are looking to try something new. Visit them at Emperors Palace.

The Butcher Shop and Grill — Sandton

The Butcher Shop and Grill in Sandton is known for their wide selection of meats. They offer succulent steaks, oxtail, wagyu, Karoo lamb, and pork. Their options when it comes to the tastes of Africa aren’t extensive, but they do offer ostrich fillet pan-fried and served with a pepper or cranberry sauce and a Game of the Day option. Just inquire as to what game they have on offer.

Moyo — Melrose Arch and Zoo Lake

A family favourite when it comes to game meat restaurants in Johannesburg, I have always loved Moyo for their African vibe and welcoming atmosphere. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the Zoo Lake restaurant on a number of occasions and have always had a great experience! Along with African singing, dancing, music and face painting, they also offer African dishes that include kudu, springbok and ostrich.

Wombles — Bryanston

Wombles offer tasty meaty dishes to satisfy your carnivorous craving, from beef, pork, duck and chicken to succulent lamb. But, for something different, try their springbok shank – oven-roasted springbok shanks in a savoury green peppercorn sauce served with stewed fruit on the side. Sounds rather delicious, doesn't it?

The Local Grill — Parktown North

The Local Grill is a popular meat spot in Parktown North if you are looking to grab a juicy steak. They offer everything from grain-fed to free-range, grass-fed beef, Karoo Persian lamb sausage and venison wors, to an indulgent pork belly roll and lamb cutlets. Not only do they serve the usual tasty meats, but they also offer venison steak rubbed and grilled to perfection served with a cranberry and port jus, and ostrich medallions. So far, which of these game meat restaurants is your favourite? Let us know in the comments below!

Chaplin's Grill — Hurlingham

I am always talking about Chaplin’s Grill, but that's because I absolutely LOVE this spot! They have the best steaks in Joburg and I have never passed up a chance to indulge in their crème brûlée or Red Velvet Cheesecake. In terms of game, you can either order the Chef’s Special Venison, grilled or pan-fried as medallions or the fan fillet ostrich in a Cumberland sauce.

The Bull Run — Sandton

Are you looking for meat game restaurants in Sandton? We've got you! The Bull Run is a great spot if you are looking to indulge in some delicious meat dishes. And, if it is game meat that you seek, they offer springbok carpaccio, venison, and ostrich fillet. The game meat options are seasonal, so be sure to inquire as to whether they are available.

Trumps Grill — Nelson Mandela Square

The only reason I head to Trumps Grill is because of their large portions of finger-licking-good sticky BBQ ribs! They have a big selection of meaty treats but have a very limited option of game meats. And, when I say limited, I mean it is literally limited to one dish. You can enjoy a 440g ostrich fillet served with a starch of your choice and vegetables (usually spinach and pumpkin).
