Kauai, South Africa’s leader in healthy food, has extended its brand into retail with the launch of an innovative frozen product range in partnership with Pick n Pay, which will be in stores from January 2020.
The partnership combines Kauai’s 23 years of experience as the leader in healthy food, with Pick n Pay’s heritage as a trusted retailer, to make healthy eating more accessible to a broader range of customers.
The Pick n Pay powered by Kauai frozen product range was developed to meet the growing demand from customers seeking healthier ready-to-eat meals that they can conveniently enjoy at home.
The new range includes a variety of healthy frozen smoothies, already available in-store, with frozen meals and side dishes available from January 2020. The range will include some of Kauai’s top-selling meals and smoothies, like the Strawberry Stinger smoothie and Butta Chicken Bowl.
Explains Dean Kowarski, CEO of Real Foods, the holding company of Kauai: “There is a major global shift as consumers seek out healthier, natural food options which are both affordable and convenient. We’re also seeing a shift towards more plant-based and vegan options. Our 23-year heritage positions us well to respond to this trend. We see our partnership with Pick n Pay as a natural extension of our commitment to making healthy eating accessible to more consumers.
“This new partnership comes on the back of an exceptional year for our group. We have just opened our 160th store locally, launched new stores in the Netherlands and Thailand, and have plans for more stores in Asia-Pacific and Europe.”
Pick n Pay, which recently relaunched its Livewell range to include easy-to-read labels for smarter, healthier food choices, says that it wants to make healthier eating easier, more accessible, and more desirable. The Pick n Pay powered by Kauai range is the latest addition to the Livewell range consisting of over 600 products.
“Healthier food shouldn’t be seen as boring or less tasty. The new range will offer our customers a delicious, yet quick and easy healthy meal option,” says Nicki Russell, Head of Innovation and Trends at Pick n Pay.
Kowarski says Kauai will bring its expertise in flavour-packed, healthy food to the growing frozen foods category, in line with frozen foods innovation in other markets. “This is a completely fresh take on frozen – it’s everything consumers love about Kauai’s delicious meals and smoothies, but with the convenience of being able to enjoy them at home whenever they want.”
The restaurant-quality meals and smoothies can simply be taken out of the freezer and cooked or prepared from frozen in the quantities they choose, so there is no wastage.
Like the menu in Kauai stores, the ready-to-eat frozen range avoids additives, preservatives, artificial colourants or and flavourants. “We only use free-range chicken and eggs, aligned with our commitment to responsible sourcing.
“Globally, the frozen foods category is seeing renewed interest and innovation as freezing is a natural preservative, meaning it doesn’t require the addition of artificial preservatives. Newer, innovative frozen food products, such as the Pick n Pay powered by Kauai range – are taking advantage of this to develop healthier, natural meals and drinks that are free from additives, yet still deliver on taste and nutrition,” concludes Kowarski.

Tea lovers can now become their own mixologist, thanks to the Bubble Tea Online Shop. Whether you're interested in brewing your own special blend of ice tea or crafting a refreshing Matcha Freezo, this store has everything you need!
Just in case you didn't know, Bubble Tea is a Taiwanese drink made popular in the 80s. This tea delight has gradually spread its goodness across the world ever since. The South African selection of bubble tea varies slightly from the original, however. According to the Bubble Tea Online Shop, South Africans prefer the iced tea bubble tea variety over the traditional milky Taiwanese recipe. Our version is also commonly made with bursting boba bubbles made from a seaweed extract (a gel-like skin) wrapped around a flavoured juice. Classic bubble tea is topped with sweetened tapioca pearls.
Making your own bubble tea is actually a lot simpler than you may think. The Bubble Tea Online Shop has almost every ingredient you could imagine to craft your own version of the iced milky tea. Their range includes Rooibos-infused iced tea syrups, tea powders, tapioca pearls and boba bubble toppings. If you are planning to go all out bubbly, Bubble Tea Online offers fully loaded starter kits. Their website also features helpful tips and recipes to get you started.
To make a simple infused iced tea bubble tea, you will need:
* To cook the tapioca pearls, add 1 part tapioca to 8 parts boiling water, boil for 40 minutes, cover and let it sit for 15 minutes. Strain and rinse cooked tapioca with cold water. Sprinkle with sugar.
Alternatively, you can top your favourite store bought flavoured iced tea with your choice of topping. Easy enough right?
We know not everyone appreciates the delicate, sweet flavours of tea. Not to worry coffee addicts, you have not been forgotten by the Bubble Tea Online Store. Their powder range features cappuccino, chocolate and chocolate cookie flavoured powders. These are perfect for whipping up a delicious home-made freezo. All you need is water, your choice of powder, ice and a strong blender!
For those with a stronger drink sensibility, Bubble Tea Online stocks an assortment of tonic syrups. Their full collection of syrups is currently on promotion for *R220. This set includes four tonic flavours - litchi, lime, strawberry and passion fruit. To make the perfect G&T, the store recommends mixing any tonic syrup with sparkling water before adding to your gin. Get creative with your cocktails by adding one or two toppings as well.
Plastic straws are a thing of the past. To help you achieve your eco-friendly goals (you really should have a few by now), Bubble Tea Online now offers bamboo, glass, metal and biodegradable straws. Additionally, the online store stocks nifty cleaning tools and carry cases for your personal straws. You definitely have no excuse now not to ditch the plastic straw forever.

If you’ve spent a Saturday or Sunday afternoon strolling through the stunning Lifestyle Garden Centre in Randburg, you’ll know that there is plenty to do there. There is also plenty to eat! On my last visit, I stumbled upon a colourful store called The Chill Zone, which opened on 27 August. Naturally, I had to check it out.
Let me just say that I have the biggest sweet tooth, so anywhere I can enjoy something sweet is brilliant in my book. I also believe that nothing is better than a smoothie on a sunny day. With that said, I decided to look around the store to see what they had on offer – and they had a lot! From frozen yoghurt to ice cream and yummy pastries, it was a sugar junkie’s paradise. They even have a ‘Waffle on a Stick’!
Honestly, I didn’t know where to start… so I took the simple route and went with their Apple and White Chocolate smoothie (R32). My husband, Brenden, went with the Ferrero Rocher gourmet milkshake (R35). They were both so creamy and satisfying (yes, I tried a little of his milkshake too… I had to). *Prices correct at time of writing.
The Chill Zone is a one-stop sweet shop, with every kind of sugary delight you could dream off (I instantly regretted my decision to try and be healthy-ish this month). Anyway, one thing’s for sure: when all this is over, I’m definitely going back… I deserve a sweet treat every now and then... and so do you. So, why not go ahead and pay them a visit, Darlings? You can enjoy a little something for me.
Say hi to The Chill Zone

A hearty bowl of fruit and oats is a sure-fire way to get your kids’ minds into gear for a tough day of learning. Oats are known to stabilise blood sugar so by giving your kids this amazing meal for breakfast, their blood sugar levels will be more likely to stay under control throughout the day. Why not soak half a cup of raw, rolled oats in warm water overnight? In the morning, they’ll be ready to eat – minimal effort involved! Top them with cinnamon or fresh fruits and plain yoghurt (maybe add a drizzle of honey if your kids need sweetness) and breakfast is served!
Nut Butter Toast
This is a one-up on the classic PB&J on white bread. Buy some healthy rye (or wholegrain if your kids aren’t quite so keen on rye) and pop it in the toaster. Look out for a sugar-free brand of peanut butter like Woolworths' Organic Peanut Butter or Peel’s Peanut Butter, which you can get at Dischem, and spread a thick layer on the toast. You can top it with banana slices and berries for some added sweetness … or why not take some inspiration from Ida Skivenes’ amazing creations to add that extra bit of excitement to your kids’ first meal of the day?
Soldiers make for a classic breakfast treat – one that both kids and adults alike simply can’t refuse. In fact, this meal is so quick to make that it’s just about as easy as reaching for that box of sugary cereal. Simply soft boil two eggs (quickly wake your child up while they boil) and get some bread (rye or wholegrain) into the toaster. Once the toast is ready, spread a thin layer of good quality butter onto the toast. Cut it up into fingers and cut off the top bit of the egg – a piece big enough to let the toast fingers fit through ... dip and enjoy.
It’s super-easy to sneak things like spinach, nuts, seeds and a range of other superfoods into your kids’ smoothies without them even noticing! Don’t overdo it on the fruit juice, salad or dried pieces, though – a fruit here and there is great for fibre and a boost of sweetness but it's a bad idea to pack six different types of fruit into one meal. Fruits are high in sugar and juices, salads and dried fruit make it super-easy to exceed the recommended amount of sugar you're supposed to consume in a day. How about blending these ingredients together to give your kid a kick-start to the day: a handful of baby spinach, a tablespoon of plain yoghurt, a frozen banana, some mango chunks, a bit of moringa powder and some ice … tasty and nutritious!
Chia Seed Pudding
Chia seed pudding has been on every health nut’s breakfast bucket list for a while now. It can be made to suit everyone’s tastes so your kids are bound to love it! Chia seeds are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and these super-seeds absorb up to 10x their weight in water, which is why they make such a great breakfast go-to. If you’re feeling uninspired, try this mango chia seed pudding recipe out – it’s like a guilt-free dessert!
