The latest addition to the Pineslopes Boulevard family, Roxanne's Rum Eatery is the place to kick off your night with a bang. From amazing food, interesting cocktails, neon lights and good music, this bar/restaurant sure knows how to set the vibe for the rest of your evening. Since we were getting ready to party the night away, we grabbed some delicious finger foods to go along with our fancy cocktails. We tried out the Crispy Squid & Curly Fries and the Tempura Battered Riblets and Curly Fries. They were YUM! As for the cocktails, if you like sipping on something sweet, we recommend the Dita Von Teese which arrived with a massive Hibiscus flower on top. Defiitely grabbed a few of those.
If you're looking for a chilled night out, then Roco Mamas is a good bet. Not only is it nestled between all the other hip and happening places in case you change your mind on that chilled night out, but it also has some of the best burgers in the business. If you haven't tried any of their Limited Edition burgers, you're totally missing out! We remember the days of the Slaw Daddy and we just couldn't get enough! And the chilli cheese fries - a MUST with any burger and ice-cold draught!
Yes, Stones does still exist and it's still as cool and pumping as it was all those years ago. This venue is an oldie but a goodie and has everything you need for an awesome night out on the town. Get out on the dance floor and show off your moves to good dance tunes and crowd pleasing oldies spun by the resident DJ; play a few rounds of pool with your mates; and down a few shooters at the bars. Just remember to be responsible, okay? They also host a few events here and there, so make sure you visit their Facebook page to see what's coming up.
Popular. Busy. Always pumping. Music. Beer. That's all we can say about Beerhouse Fourways. They have the biggest beer variety available in the city, making it a great spot if you love beer or are looking to sample a few different types. They have everything and anything from fruity, playful, light and aromatic to refreshing, complex, heavy and dark. There's a beer for all tastes. Visit here often enough and you'll become a beer expert for sure! Other than the wide variety in beer, they also host a few good parties including their famous Silent Disco. Visit their Facebook page to keep up to date with the latest events and happenings.
This pool hall has been around for donkeys years! It's a great place to be if you're looking to unwind after a long week at the office, grab a beer or two with your mates or brush up on your pool table skills. And the great thing about it is the fact that it's within walking distance of all the other party spots in the centre.
Billy The BUMS
Pineslopes Boulevard wouldn't be Pineslopes Boulevard without Billy's! This one is yet another oldie but goodie that many of us have visited at some point in our lives. This was the place to be for ladies night, it was also a cool hangout for varsity students from UJ (speaking from experience) and for the wiser (and older) folk to grab a draught and chill. They play party favourites and golden oldies that'll have you dancing all night long. Not to mention their cocktails!
This one is a place we have never seen before until just recently - Adrenaline Cafe, situated just down the way from Ballbreakers. We walked past and this place was pumping with loud dance music and loads of flashing lights. We don't know how we have missed this one in the past! They too host quite a few events over the weekends, so don't forget to check out their lineup!
A bar in the sky, it doesn't get more extreme than that! The SkyBar is a must if you're into the whole extreme side of life. There's abseiling, bungee jumping and climbing activities around this bar, as well as the opportunity to get a 360-degree view of Fourways and surrounds while sipping on your favourite beer. Just make sure you get there early to experience the SkyBar as it closes at 21:00 (20:00 on Sundays and public holidays). We will definitely be going up there when we next visit the area!
Roxanne's Rum Eatery Is Calling Your Name
The one thing I need to stress is that Roxanne's is not the kind of place you go to for a family dinner. Well, you can but your kids might just leave there with sailor tattoos and a keen interest in Sting & The Police (which is a good thing, we all need a bit of Sting in our lives). Either way, the vibe is hip, happening and lekker. Roxanne's Rum Eatery is the kind of place you go to with the gang and have a bite to eat, get a good buzz going and bliss out until late.
Let's line the stomach before we get to the "Rum" part of this establishment's namesake. The food is a mix of local and Caribbean flavours brought together in an impeccable fashion. I went for the 300g rum-basted rump steak with chips, a salad and some sweet chilli sauce (which is super spicy - one of my addictions) and my blushing ladylove settled for the vegetarian platter which consisted of crumbed mushrooms, beetroot and hummus balls, black bean and quinoa balls, chickpea balls, grilled veg, capsicum and greens and a buttered rum sauce.
What makes this booze 'n food spot even more rock 'n roll is their Fallen Heroes Tattoo Studio where they get a tattoo artist in every now and then to dish out ink to interested patrons. Keep an eye on Roxanne's Facebook to see when the next tattoo party's going down - it looks awesome.
That's all good but what's up with the cocktail menu? Rum for days, my dudes ... rum for days. Roxanne's Rum Eatery boasts a line of mixologists that can slap together a steady drink with some of the best blokes in the business. Their rum menu is extensive and their cocktails are moderately priced and brilliantly constructed.
This brings us to the coup de gras - their desserts. They have this chocolate waffle thing that's just black and beautiful. It consists of two chocolate waffles topped with ice cream and a dollop of ... activated charcoal cream. Yup. it's tasty regardless. Their dessert menu is pretty sexy, to say the least. It's a treat you'd best experience for yourself, no spoilers!
Do yourself a favour and just skim through Roxanne's Rum Eatery's Instagram page and you'll get an idea of what it's all about ... you'll thank us in the morning for telling you about this super Jozi establishment.
*Please note this restaurant us currently closed while they search for a new venue.

Jolly Cool Bar & Restaurant
This one has been around for many years and to this day, it's still one of the coolest hangouts in Parkhurst. Head through to Jolly Cool to play a few rounds of pool, grab a bite to eat, hang out with your mates, have a few drinks to unwind, and have a jolly good time. This popular hangout is the place to be after 17:00, so make sure you arrive early (finding parking can be a nightmare). With reasonably priced food and drinks, this is the best way to chill out. Don't leave without grabbing one of their pizzas!
Directly across from Jolly Cool is the Jolly Roger Restaurant & Pub. From the moment you walk into this one, you instantly get the feeling of a traditional British pub. It's crowded, rather loud and can be smokey but the vibe is homey and friendly. Along with the warm atmosphere, there's also beer on tap, delicious pub food and friendly service. Don't forget to check out their all-year-round specials.
This stylish and upbeat little spot is a gem in the Melville precinct. It gives you great music, a social environment, drinks, a choice of 60 different cocktails and meals (in case you get a little hungry with all that drinking) all rolled up into one trendy, exciting and interesting venue. Happy Hour lasts for seven hours, from 12:00 until 19:00 daily (yes, EVERY DAY!), and during this extended hour you can enjoy their special of two-for-the-price-of-one cocktails. Go easy on the Long Island Ice Tea though, two of those and you'll be under the table if you're a lightweight.
This one is an oldie but a goodie! Billy’s is a bar/cocktail lounge that caters for a more mature scene. With a variety of over 60 different cocktails and mixed drinks, American-style beef burgers (with over 15 different toppings to choose from), and good tunes, this is the ideal spot to wind down the week. Sit and chill in the seated areas and socialise with friends or, if you feel like busting a move, there is a DJ playing the latest music - feel free to make requests if you want to dance to your favourite tunes (there's always a great 80s track in the line-up).

There's one in Bedfordview, Kyalami, Fourways, Bryanston, Sandown and Woodmead, so take your pick, call up your mates and head down to the bar for a cold one (you can find us at the Sandown and Fourways venues more often than not). You can expect a good atmosphere, outstanding service, vintage wines, interesting cocktails and good food. The Radium Beerhall
Enjoy a night on the town in one of Joburg’s oldest bars. Expect live performances by local musicians and song writers, check out the new talent on the music scene, have a drink at famous Barman Larry’s Savannah Dry bar; and enjoy a great meal. With walls covered in old memorabilia, posters from ‘back in the day’ and newspaper clippings that have recorded the Radium Beerhall’s history, this bar definitely does give off the vintage vibe.
Hell's Kitchen is a rockabilly-themed bar in the heart of Melville. It's got amazing décor that's sure to catch your eye from the minute you set foot inside! Their food is very tasty and is best washed down with their signature Hellfire Whisky! Perch yourself on one of the comfy leather couches and wind down while you listen to their awesome lineup of rock music. Let the mayhem begin!
This is just the place if you're more into the rock side of life. From Rock n' Roll and the Blues to metal and contemporary music, Rumours Rock City is a unique place when compared with your usual after-work hangouts. Not only do they offer great food and drinks at the best prices, a cosy log fire to keep you warm during the colder months and sports on the big screen, but they also promote great South African music and musicians. Keep an eye on their Facebook events calendar, there's always something happening.
Another addition to the Melville strip is the Lonely Hearts Club. This is a tapas bar and restaurant, yes, but it makes for an awesome hangout spot after work. Not only does it have a great selection of cocktails and wines and tasty tapas (there are great vegetarian options on the menu too), but also good food, good vibes, good company and great cocktails.
If it's cocktails you want, it's cocktails you'll at Social On Main. Their cocktail menu is amazing and comprehensive, it has something for all tastes and palates, and the food.... so delicious! This one is a must if you find yourself in Bryanston.
Neon lights, amazing cocktails, cool decor and awesome food, Roxanne's Rum Eatery is an up-and-coming hotspot in Fourways and for good reason! The drinks menu is massive! There's everything from 'spikedshakes' (AKA adult milkshakes) and spiked iced tea to wine, G&Ts and tantalising cocktails. If you enjoy sweet cocktails, then make sure you try the Dita Von Teese - Mhoba White Rum, lychee syrup, Socks Guava, lime and cranberry juice - it's delicious! And for the hungry, there is a food menu filled with loads of finger foods, glam burgers, busting bagels, fresh salads and dangerously delicious cheesecakes.
