Amadeus Mozart. Stevie Wonder. Judit Polgár. Child prodigies have the ability to impact the world around them in a big way. Chefs Lisa De Beer and Darren O’Donovan are just that. Their combined resumes are proof of just that: extroardinary talent at a young age is quite possible. Their time spent at Cube Tasting Kitchen, Aurum and Est Est Alea just adds to their abilities in the kitchen. To make matters even more interesting, is that Mitchel Du Plessis of Est Est Alea has been thrown into the mix as chef de cuisine.

Above and beyond the fact that the team is quite young and promising, Embarc Restaurant was planned and set up during the most troubling of time: the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa. What worked in the restaurant's favour was that rental prices in Parkhurst, where the restaurant is situated, dropped drastically. Another bittersweet thing that worked in their favour was being able to purchase kitchen equipment from other restaurants that unfortunately had to shut down.

We could pick up a lot of kitchen equipment at great prices, but it’s been a massive concern looking at where people sit financially … we’ve taken a risk and believe that because it’s a small restaurant and we have a loyal following that people will come out to support, and we’ve been fortunate in that we’ve been full since we opened.

Embarc Restaurant

The menu boasts the chefs' histories, bringing out their individual flare into a single combined offering. Each dish is a work of art. In Lisa’s words: “It’s contemporary dining – high-end but unpretentious.” What makes the menu unique is that diners can have each main entree as a starter portion at half price, allowing them to create their own five- or seven-course tasting menu.

There are no wrong choices when it comes to Embarc Restaurant's menu. Standouts include prawns wrapped in pastry and deep-fried, served with aerated creamed tom yum with a lime, mirin and soya gel and orange and pickled ginger mayonnaise. Another top choice is the beer and beef: carpaccio of beer-cured sirloin, cold-smoked, seared and shaved and served with a beer reduction dressing, a sprinkling of popped sorghum (the root of umqombothi) for crunch and a sprinkle of parmigiano reggiano and yeasted mayonnaise.

From the main menu, the parmesan and onion risotto: caramelised onions are folded through the risotto along with an onion stock and served with crunchy onions, onion seeds, onion cream, pine nuts, parmesan and truffle shavings.

Embarc Restaurant

Embarc Restaurant opened its doors on 18 November 2020 and can seat 30+ guests, making it an incredibly intimate dining experience. This is exactly what the team is going for: to build a band of loyal and regular visitors. You should become part of that following.

Butchers In Joburg

By Kim Brown

Remember that our “Top Picks” are not paid for and are compiled at the discretion of the journalist. We only write about what we love.

Situated in Joburg's most popular culinary strip, 4th Avenue Parkhurst, The Station opened its doors to the public in mid-November. Modeled after the legendary London Underground tube travel network, the restaurant started out as a lovely little bistro and bar in Bree Street, Cape Town. With the formal introduction out of the way, let's dive right into it, shall we?

The Station

A Little Bit Of London In Joburg

Founded by Neil Basel, The Station is inspired by London style living, complete with decor and design that would make any Brit feel at home. The theme is inspired by the colours, sights and sounds that the London Underground has to offer. The decor features the trademark Underground seating and a station map. There’s also a red telephone booth and even speakers in the bathroom playing the sounds of the Underground.

It's More than Fish, Chips & Mushy Peas At The Station

It's been said that British food is quite bland and as exciting as eel pie sounds, we'll give it a skip. Fortunately for us, the menu at The Station in Parkhurst sings like the Sex Pistols and we're loving it. If you dig spicy food then you're in for a treat!  We recommend that you start off with the London Hot Eye Beef Pan which consists of cubed sirloin in a creamy peri-peri sauce, served with in-house baked ciabatta.

Moving on to the all-important mains, add a bit of classic UK flair, we recommend that you hook yourself up with a delicious Kingsley Kebab! Yup, there's chicken or beef (or both!), and comes served with tzatziki, hummus, a spicy tomato salsa, and a lekker slice of freshly made pita bread. Give the Chicken Kiev, drenched in Parmesan and truffle mushroom sauce, a go - it's winner times ten... just like The Station!

The Station

150 Gins At The Station

Yup, you read that correctly - a whole 150 of them. The Station’s gin menu, which offers visitors the chance to DIY their own G&T - from brand to botanicals, the sky's the limit.

Above and beyond the impressive gin selection, The Station also offers a massive cocktail menu as well as a collection of local and international beers and ciders... and we're sure if you ask nicely they'll serve your beer at room temperature like a real Englishman would prefer.

New Spot, New Menu!

The restaurant's much-loved sharing philosophy remains, but this new spot has a somewhat revamped menu. “We’ve moved away from traditional Spanish tapas,” explains Sian, the NPD Chef & Quality Manager. “We’ve kept the concept of small plates built for sharing, but we’ve tried to elevate the level of elegance and quality. The menu is focused on serving fresh seasonal dishes, where we have added new and unique tapas only served at Parkhurst. These dishes are prepared simply and plated. We have also incorporated new edgy cocktail offerings to our list of alcohol beverages.

We’re thrilled to see a brand, we at Life & Brand Portfolio hold so close to our hearts, expand into iconic locations like 4th Avenue, Parkhurst and the excitement people express when they see our logo go up at the front of the store. The brand might have been born in Cape Town, but we can’t wait to show Jozi what La Parada is all about” says Life and Brand Gauteng Regional Manager, Jason Wilkins.

What Is It?

The Lizamore and Associates Gallery in Parkhurst presents Karin Preller's latest exhibition 'Almost no memory' this March.

In 'Almost no memory', Karin Preller engages her personal archive of photographs, in paintings that are as much about memory as the condition of forgetting/the erasure of memory. The exhibition reflects Preller’s continued interest in personal photographic archives, made public in paintings refracted through the prism of the past and the camera’s lens.

In her new works, more so than in previous work, the ephemerality of memory is made visible by her handling of paint; by figures that merge with the background, by the erasure of details that echo the erasure of memory. The title of the exhibition, 'Almost no memory', implies something of the elusiveness of memory and the spectral, haunting nature of the photograph.

Chef James Diack was 28 years old when he first combined his passion for provenance with armfuls of freshly-grown ingredients from his family's farm in Magaliesburg, Brightside, and set about to change the landscape of Joburg dining. “It’s been an incredible seven years, and I have learnt many lessons,” explains Chef James Diack. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m so grateful to every customer who has visited Coobs over the last seven years and I’m excited to celebrate this milestone with our 2019 summer menu.

Not only has Coobs won numerous awards over the years, but it’s also pushed the boundaries of provenance-inspired eating beyond simple bean sprouts and home-grown herbs – both for the 130-strong team that works for him, and for the customers who get to indulge in Brightside Farm’s latest crop. His passion for provenance has established him as a thought leader in the South Africa dining scene and has put his Wild Boar Ragu and Pork Belly firmly on the foodie map.

Coobs Summer 2019/20 Menu

His latest menu, for summer 2019/20, is a collection of the freshest ingredients the farm has to offer, plated as refined dishes and proffered alongside some of South Africa’s best boutique wines. Dishes are tasty, fresh, simple and show off the quality of the ingredients.

Some of Coobs’ best-selling dishes from the last seven years include Beef Carpaccio, Caprese Salad, Duck Liver Parfait, Acorn-fed Pork and Lamb Bangers, Tarragon-roasted Baby Chicken and Coobs’ Carbonara Pasta with crispy wild boar bacon. For dessert, experience the farm's memory lane with Malva Pudding or Spiced Poached Pears with nut brittle and honeycomb ice-cream (pictured below).

Coobs

Growth Of The Group

Over the course of seven years, the success of Coobs has led to increased production from the farm, and demand from customers for more. Coobs is now the flagship restaurant in The Brightside Group alongside James’ three other restaurants, Douglas + Hale (2018: Parktown North), Il Contadino (2017: Parktown North) and La Stalla (2018: Melville).

There will only ever be one Coobs,” explains James, “but, while each of my other restaurants is slightly different, they are individually driven by a young chef and front of house manager that I have trained to deliver simple, beautiful, flavourful food with gracious hospitality in stunning environments.

Coobs

Awards

Coobs has won the hearts of thousands… from Trip Advisor Awards to Eat Out Everyday Eateries, Best of Joburg and the coveted Jenny Handley Gourmet Guide Award – One Plate received in 2019. In 2018, James' work for sustainable farming, eating and education was recognised by SASSI when he was awarded a 2018 Trailblazer Chef Award.

Coobs

Successes

For James, and the Diack family, the biggest success has come in the form of being able to grow what the farm produces and to grow their impact on the community around them.

We’ve grown from 13 staff to over 130 – never mind the families that our staffs’ income supports, and communities we ultimately invest into. This is the true essence of sustainability that sits as the cornerstone of my business – a sustainable business that can hopefully outlast the recession, and at the same time, provide 95% of our own ingredients.

Coobs is located in the leafy suburb of Parkhurst, Johannesburg. To experience the latest menu, featuring some of the top dishes from the last seven years, make a booking on +2711 447 0710 or email [email protected].

For The Bohemian

The Maboneng Precinct
Most people go to The Maboneng Precinct on Sundays because of Arts On Main. However, this precinct is perfect for any and every free-spirit in Joburg on any day of the week. Quirky food places, coffee shops, art galleries and fashion boutiques - it's a bohemian's dream. It's real downtown Jozi, so go experience it for yourself.

1Fox Precinct
Popularly know for the Market Shed and The Good Luck Bar, 1Fox Precinct is another bohemian favourite. Nestled in Ferreirasdorp, everyone (boho or not) must visit it at least once. The precinct is also home to the rad Fox Junction event venue - so don't just throw any silly ol' event, throw a real unconventional and unforgettable shindig here.

For The Hipster

Braamfontein
All hipsters love Braam so if haven't been to Braam yet, you're losing your touch honey. Get with the program! From alternative fashion to trendy clothing stores, it's one of the top non-mainstream fashion hubs in the city. Don't even get us started on the quirky coffee shops and rad restaurants ...
