For those of you who don't live in the East but are dying for restaurant food, check out these eateries delivering across the city.
Plaka is situated on the piazza at Eastgate Shopping Centre. Standing out starkly against a collection of fast food restaurants, Plaka is the home of Mediterranean eating at Eastgate. Newly refurbished to offer patrons an even more authentic taste of the Greek islands, Plaka Eastgate is spacious and inviting. With shades of crisp white and ocean blue, their decor immediately transports you to another place. This is the ideal spot for a quiet Sunday lunch with the family, date night or a celebratory dinner.
Plaka has been delivering authentic Greek cuisine to Joburg foodies for over 26 years. Their menu is generous, offering a variety of traditional meze, fish dishes and vegetarian dips. Made from the freshest ingredients, their food is simple yet delicious. Having eaten our way through the menu, we recommend the meze platter for two, a hearty feast of pita bread, assorted dips, falafel, handcut chips, tomato salad and grilled halloumi. Paired with a chilled glass of white wine, this is more than satisfying. Sit and talk for hours over this meal with loved ones for a true Greek dining experience.
Plaka's dessert menu is equally enticing, featuring classic Greek pastries, ice cream and rich, creamy yoghurt served with crushed nuts and honey. The Eastgate branch also treats their patrons to a special palate cleanser in between mains and dessert - slices of chilled watermelon sprinkled with cinnamon. Overall, their service is welcoming and attentive. It is definitely worth a visit!
Once you have devoured your meal and thoroughly soaked up the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere at Plaka Eastgate, pop into their on-site deli. Here, you will find the best imported products to make your own Greek feast at home, along with a selection of home-made meals, biscuits and other sweet delights. It's this little touch of homeliness that sets Plaka apart from the rest.
There are two other Plaka venues in Gauteng to visit on your great Greek eating adventures. Click here for more information.
Just a few blocks away from Plaka at Eastgate you will find its rival, Mythos. Located on the square at Bedford Centre, this authentic Greek restaurant recently reopened its doors to welcome in patrons, old and new. Their newly refurbished decor is evocative of a Mediterranean palace, with opulent drapery, generous seating and romantic lighting.
Mythos first opened in 2006 and has since expanded across Joburg at various venues. However, their branch at Bedford Centre has always maintained an air of fine dining without sacrificing a family-friendly atmosphere. There is almost always a celebration to be had at Mythos, such as an anniversary dinner or their 'Big Fat Greek Evenings' which take place on the last Saturday of every month. Complete with a fantastic feast, live music and dancing, performances from trained belly dancers and breaking of the plates, Mythos offers their guests far more than just a dining experience. The warmth of family and friends exudes in everything they do.
But, speaking of the food, Mythos has both a set menu and main menu. Featuring an array of traditional salads, dips, sides and main meals, there is no shortage of Greek flavour here. Mythos prides itself on using only the best imported ingredients, evident in the flavours and quality of their food. And, like any good Greek restaurant, sharing is the name of the game here. The meze platter for two includes keftethes, fillet souvlaki, chicken souvlaki, prawns, calamari, yiro, peri-peri chicken livers, tzatziki, taramosalata and pita bread. While quite protein heavy, this platter can easily be paired with a village Greek salad to find its perfect balance.
After a filling Greek feast, what could you possibly have room leftover for? Gelato, of course! Mythos at Bedford Centre boasts an enticing gelato counter, stocked with a variety of flavours. We say give them all a try to find your favourite. From chocolate hazelnut to pistachio, funfetti and even tiramisu flavours, they have something to soothe any sweet tooth.

So, there you have it! All that our two favourite Greek giants have to offer. We'll let you make the final verdict on who the ultimate winner of this challenge is. Opa!

Mythos have been in the business of serving up authentic Greek cuisine since 2006. Never taking the term 'authentic' lightly, Mythos' Head Chef brings a wealth of family recipes to the table. She also insists on importing all her key ingredients directly from Greece. It is this dedication to excellence which has won Mythos Restaurants the Best of Joburg's Best Greek Restaurant award for five consecutive years.
Mythos has been a long-standing favourite at Bedford Centre. This eclectic, European-style restaurant piazza is the heart of the Bedford Centre Shopping Mall. Mythos' simple ethos of authenticity and tradition helps it stand out among the many vibrant eateries at Bedford Centre. Catering both to Bedfordview's large Greek community and to those of us who just love Greek food, Mythos is a home away from home. So, it was with sadness that we looked upon the bolted doors of our favourite Greek restaurant in the east a couple of months ago.
However, it was all for the greater good. Mythos has now officially re-opened at Bedford Centre! With a stunningly upgraded dining section, new menu features and a gourmet gelato bar, this family restaurant has never looked better.
Mythos Bedford Square invited us to their official re-opening on Thursday, 19 September 2019. We opted to sit in their al fresco dining area for a bit of fresh air. Luckily, we could also see all the action going on from our table, live music, belly dancing and a buffet table which had everyone clamoring for more.
Mythos served up an array of their traditional Greek tapas, as well as a few main menu tasters. Needless to say, we filled our blue and white plates to the brim with deep fried squid heads, dolmades, falafel, keftethes, spanakopita, cheese croquettes, santorini halloumi, pita bread and Greek salad! Topped with the best tzatziki we have ever tasted and super smooth hummus, these tasty nibbles were a divine treat.
By the time we came back for mains, we were already well satisfied. Nevertheless, we had to sample the roast potatoes and lamb. We are utterly convinced that Greek chefs make the best roast potatoes of all the culinary masters in the world. Mythos did not prove us wrong. Hearty and crispy, with just enough seasoning, Mythos' roasties are a must-try. Of course, the lamb was cooked to perfection. Tender and sweet, it was the perfect way to round off our main meal.
Between mains and dessert, Mythos unveiled a brand new feature that is sure to have old and new customers dancing with joy. Opa! Big Fat Greek Evenings are set to take over Mythos at Bedford Square on Saturday nights. With traditional Greek music and dance, plate breaking and belly dancing, these events promise to be an all out festivity of Greek culture. We were treated to a taste of these upcoming events, as skillful belly dancers enchanted diners with their sultry moves. Overall, the atmosphere of the entire evening was one of celebration and joy and we will certainly be returning for more.
Finally, dessert was served, grandma's famous loukoumades, coated in syrupy honey, pecans and a dust of cinnamon. Mythos also opened their brand new Gelato Bar for service, offering a variety of rich and creamy ice cream. Unfortunately, we didn't have the stomach for these extra sweet desserts, but other guests seemed delighted by their sticky portions. In future we will definitely learn not to gorge on the feta cheese to keep space for pudding!
Visit their website for more information about the new Mythos look and menu features. You can also follow them on social media for event updates and specials:

This Greek eatery is based in the popular mixed-use precinct of Melrose Arch. They specialise in Mediterranean fare perfectly paired with sweet wines. Their menu boasts a wide selection of olives, cheeses, dips, salads, seafood, vegetarian and meat options. But it is their yiros that keep us coming back for more. Their yiros come in several options, but the halloumi version is a favourite. The cheese is crispy and golden and somehow more flavourful than regular halloumi. It is served with the creamiest tzatziki and a lovely array of fresh ingredients adding the perfect crunch.
This little eatery is tucked away in the heart of Boksburg, down Northrand Road. They are a small family-owned business that makes great Greek food. What is great about this restaurant is that they have Greek Evenings featuring music, dance and, of course, plate breaking. What would any Greek night be without a bit of plate breaking? For those less destructive than us, the food is reason enough to visit. Their yiros are available in beef, kefte (meatballs), lamb, pork, sheftalia (pork kebabs), chicken, calamari, squid, halloumi or feta and falafel. Pro tip - when in doubt, go for the chicken. This succulent spiced chicken will always be a winner. And delicious. If you're up for it, try their Greek coffee. But be warned, this miracle drink is not for everyone.
This restaurant has several locations throughout Joburg. They offer Greek specialty food that will make you feel like you're on the white sandy beaches of Greece. Their selection of olives and feta options are definitely worth a try. Their yiro comes in one option - beef, but they do it well. Fresh bread stuffed with tender cuts of marinated beef, followed by the slight crunch of the vegetables, all coming together with a scrumptious sauce. Yum!
Mythos is one of the largest and most popular Greek restaurants in Joburg with eight locations in all four corners of our city. They offer authentic Greek cuisine such as souvlaki, meze and, of course, yiros. They have a variety of yiros including chicken, halloumi and beef. The Chicken & Halloumi yiro is a must try, as it combines the best of both worlds - meat and cheese. The yiros are served with tzatziki, tomato and red onion. Just be sure to try a slice of their sweet and rich Baklava Cheesecake before you leave.
Nikos also has several locations scattered across Joburg. Their menu, though small, is filled with ample choices from meze to desserts. Out of all the places on this list, their yiro options are the most extensive with 13 choices in chicken, beef, pork, lamb and vegetarian. We can't recommend any particular yiro, we rather suggest you try them all and pick your favourite. This way, you'll get a chance to try their meats, vegetables and dips as well as all the combinations of the three.
This café is located in Cresta Shopping Centre in the northern suburbs. Their menu is stacked with plentiful options from stuffed waffles to gourmet sandwiches. None of these items are yiros though. What they do have are zivas, which are naan-like flat breads folded around delectable stuffings. In essence, a ziva is a yiro. Or at least they're similar enough to warrant a ziva making this list. They have a few options to choose from but the Halloumi, Avo and Tomato Ziva is close to the best thing since sliced bread. If Greek food is lacking anything, it's the creaminess of fresh avocado. This ziva brings the lusciousness of avocado to the almost perfect yiro, giving us perfection.
